A little update on some projects, while on a walk. Sorry about the quality, they were all taken with the phone, because I didn't have my camera with me.

Does anyone have any updates on this project?

If ever I would use the ridiculous phrase; LMAO or Epic Fail it would be for this...

I am not the best at phone photography. I am guessing that by now you all know which project this is. However, for those who are visiting, this is the ALT Hotel on Portage.

What's going on here again? This is on Mcdermot and Lombard by Waterfront.

Keep your eyes on the Sky (if you know what I mean Phase II

See I wasn't Lying -

Sky from up high... Kind of.

What's new in the District? How about a lot of District, and Loftwork Condos on James?

More District Condo's

Boutique Hotel on the Red. Or as I like to say, large mass of dirt.

Is the measuring Station staying avec le Hotel? A better idea of the size of the project comes with this pic.

Hey Chris, thanks for the updates much appreciated. In reference to the boutique hotel by Sunstone the former harbour masters building will be part of the project as a restaurant space separate from the new hotel construction.

The project on McDermot and Waterfront(aprox.) is a redevelopment of the building with them filling in the awkward gap (in the picture) for more floorspace. The name of the tenant escapes me but i'm sure someone will chime in.

Department of Entrepreneurship, Training and Trade is the main tenant.

Awesome stuff, thanks for the updates there Chris. It's looking good!

I think that active transport sign is hilarious..."coming in/à venir en 2010!"

When is it actually coming?

Unfortunately, if I had to venture a guess I would have to say never. Those signs are the first I have ever heard of such a proposal. However, I will look and see if it is highlighted in the future active transport trails, and if it is, what exactly will be built.

**EDIT**

After looking at the 2012 Active Transportation map, I see nothing in the works for active transportation for York.

Speaking of bike lanes, how unrealistic would it be to desire cycle tracks on more roads?

Winnipeg Free Press - PRINT EDITION
Rail yard redevelopment would bring density, investment and revenue
By: Brent Bellamy (trueviking)

Posted: 1:00 AM

Quote:
Over the last decade, suburban development has lowered Winnipeg's overall population density by pushing the edges of the city outward disproportionately to its population growth. Winnipeg's physical expansion without an equivalent increase in its tax base has stretched the government's ability to pay for services and infrastructure.
Lower population density caused by urban sprawl has resulted in each taxpayer being responsible for a greater proportion of what government provides. With more roads and fewer taxpayers, either taxes must rise, roads must fall into disrepair, or governments must go into debt.
The solution to this incongruent relationship is simply to increase Winnipeg's population at a greater rate than its geographic footprint. An important strategy to achieve this goal would be to maximize the opportunity for large-scale, infill redevelopment on sites that are currently (or were formerly) serving an industrial purpose.
A small-scale example of successful industrial-land redevelopment can be found along the Red River in Winnipeg's Exchange District. When the massive Amy Street Steam Plant and adjacent rail spurs were removed to create Waterfront Drive, it became a catalyst for significant growth in the area, stimulating commercial development and the construction of hundreds of residential units in the area.

And related (sadly, the Free Press made it REALLY small, so its hard to read the writing:

I'm sure someone will be paid a couple million to come up with about the same ideas you've got there.

If they're going to make a new neighbourhood, why not start with the existing neighbourhoods to the north and south of the tracks? Unless those neighbourhoods are improved, I don't think there will be much of a market for housing that is squished into the space between them that is currently occupied by the CPR.

Just to chime in in agreement with Andy, redeveloping the CPR yards really brings into focus the difference between social and physical development. Areas of the city, like the Exchange district and downtown, where not enough people live to begin with, need physical development - more buildings, better transit, etc. etc. The north and west ends, however, bisected by the yards, need serious social development, social development that is beyond the capacity of Winnipeg and Manitoba and probably even the federal government. (Meaning, in my opinion, making first nations people full and equal citizens by abolishing the reserve system). So even thinking about redeveloping the CPR yards obscures what is really needed in that part of the city. It would be the most massive example of social engineering through architecture in Winnipeg's history, and considering the track record of previous attempts, such as the North Portage redevelopment, I wouldn't expect any improvement over the dirty trains. In 50 years young guys on the future equivalent of this site will be posting pictures of the yards and lamenting how it was paved over for crappy apartment blocks in the name of progress.

If they go down that route, they should turn the land into multiple man-made hills with an Rapid Transit corridor, at least. Then, we can get skyline pics that are actually somewhat close to Downtown that can show the buildings individually.

Thanks! Obviously, the Rapid Transit was most of my idea

It is funny no one in the city ever thinks about the Rail yards in another way.

Look at it like this, we all know you are not going to get a high tax base from it due to the fact poverty in its extreme is on both sides. Making Natives equal??? Hell they get more free bee's then anyone else. For that part I would suggest NO MORE NATIVE STATUS, you are a Canadian and you will be part of society and work just like every other culture does and not live off making babies and welfare. Simple. The days of past when these reserves were made and all this are gone, when a country goes to war and takes over the other, they don't give handouts to the loser. Sorry if that is harsh, but thats life and there is not one living Native person around that lived in those times. It is time to move on. Then people in general would respect Natives a lot more, but by feeding them handouts you will never get respect. And in the end you will get poverty.

Now getting past that, you have an two underpasses on the yards, and two bridges, 3 if you count the sorta freeway. Now people always complain about getting from one end of the city to the other. Take a close look on a map all the way from transcona to centerport, you will see a nice clear path for a actual freeway right across the city, and best of all, the over passes and underpasses are in place. If you bring this into the picture you have a lot of traffic flowing across the entire city ( I would connect it to center port and eventually to Hwy1 via Dugald Rd. Now Housing infill people say, WHY? Why can it not be ligth industrial? This would solve the above part of the poverty equation, you would bring jobs into and area that is now, well just box cars and such. Sure put in some Small apt blocks as large ones in poor neighborhoods tend to get infested fast with the wrong people. And no more Welfare Infill, I have no problem with a Habitat style way of building, that also makes the poor part of the people and city want to keep their homes, or condos clean and neat as they have to pay for them. But when you hand something for free , you can look at your own kids, and see they really do not respect or appreciate it for long.

Also in this mix would be a nice Rapid transit system, right from the Airport and to Transcona ( big dream I know ) Also a lot of green space as green space is a key to a happy neighborhood, Playgrounds for kids etc.

The city needs to think out of the box, not think grand schemes and think what works best. And what most other cities do when they have land stretching across the entire city..

Just my thoughts on this.

people in peg seem to always have something to complain about... lets think positive for once.. who cares about the rail yards.. lets complete the hundered other projects before we even consider starting work on this one.. they need to complete phase 2 of rapid transit... try to connect cheif peguis to inkster.. and finish work on the stadium and chrm.. and centerport. Forget the rail yards.. we have so many other important projects to worry about.. maybe in 20 years well have time to figure out how to make better use of that land.

Personally i'm just looking forward to 2015 that's when i think well know for sure where we truly stand as a city. were making a strong push to host the junos and grey cup in 2014- 2015 plus the opening of the canadian human rights museum will help boost alot of tourism during those years. the work on the alt project will most likely be done by than aswell... along with journey to churchill. I think those will be defining years for us as a city,, either we'll be recognized as city thats truly turned itself around or well still be where we are right now.. which i doubt because personally i think the city is making a hell of a lot of progress... and i think that most people who live in the city are noticing it as well. We are not even close to the same city we were from 2005 not even close.

im really really excited to see this city evolve because slowly but steadily its beginning to show how much its changing and grown from the late 90's to now. And with so many exciting projects coming up in the future its only gonna get better. the potential is endless

i hope centerport and everything else really accomplish what it set out to do.. and thats to boost our economy and attract more businesses to invest in winnipeg..

Im sure I'll be corrected if Im wrong, but my last understanding, ALT is slated to be completed late 2013 or early 2014.

To me the rail yards project is a complete waste of time and money trying to fix the north end is like trying to make Hitler a guy who likes Jews it's not gonna happen. The project would just be another portage place a complete waste.

So much construction going on in town now. This truly feels like the 'day' to the 'night' when I first arrived here in late 2006.

I'm personally awaiting the start of construction on the new U of M athletic centre. They have been working on the locker rooms all summer, but the actual new addition has yet to start construction. I am really looking forward to it, as are so many other staff and students at the University. I don't have anything against the Gritty Grotto, but its time for the UofM to catch up to the rest of the major Universities in this country with modern athletic space (as the UofW is doing now too).

Adding a second pool would be good too... All in good time I guess.
