I'm assuming this is the hotel Simms was talking about, as from just seeing it, it looks pretty boring.

At first I thought that was the site of the Riverwood 200 Development (here's a link to an article in the Smyrna-Vinings Patch) But turns out that's a few blocks west.

Very boring. I see it every day. The kind of hotel that is replicated dozens of times across the suburbs near office buildings and business parks/airports, just a new brand for the area (Hyatt House...extended stay). It's the same group doing the Hotel Midtown renovations (also will be reflagged a Hyatt), among other things.

http://www.nobleinvestment.com/Noble/index.aspx

They also did the W hotel conversions in Midtown and Buckhead for point of reference, and they are based here (pretty large group in terms of assets).

The Delta Credit Union has basically taken shape...looks good for CU branch, but shouldn't be there.

A good many people out and about today...there is some rap thing going on downtown, which is where I went to catch a bit of hectic city life, and man is it a turnoff when there are a bunch of rappers in town. I would equate it to a slew of death metal/hardcore weirdo bands coming to town...they just don't attract the best crowds. I'm pretty sure every candy painted lifted Chevy with color coordinated rims in Clayton and Dekalb counties was downtown cruising around blasting ghetto rap. They're also not a group used to bikers and pedestrians...or maybe they don't give a shit. Not a good display to families and visitors.

Usually I love going downtown to hear car horns blasting and seeing crowds on the sidewalks and the density of the buildings, but today I was pretty thrilled to return to Midtown.

Really? I actually like watching cars with big rims driving down the street blasting the latest rap music. The bass sounds good and I find it entertaining! It's a staple of hip hop culture. Nothing more than a bunch of young people feeling good and vibing to the music. No harm done. I'd rather deal with blasting rap from young people in Atlanta than old people driving slow in Florida. Or parking lot slow traffic in New York or L.A. What I've come to realize is that every city has a different and unique driving experience. We're no different.

Wal-Mart opens their first Atlanta Metro Grocery Store. This store is probably very similar to what will go up elsewhere in the city.

Maybe this is what they are considering for the Glenwood Park site?

It is against the law to have any music blasting from your car, let alone "music" with profanity-laced tirades and bass loud enough to rattle the car to pieces. It's fine if you like that kind of music, but not everybody does. And I'm with Simms on this one, the loud music is only a subset of the crap brought along with the crowds this type of event attracts.

I understand that it is, yes. Of course NIMBYism is already rearing it's ugly head around here but in my opinion that would be a good fit for that tract. The ERD Kroger is the busiest non-fuel Kroger in their multi-state Atlanta region and it could use the competition.

What kind of crap is it that these people bring and/or attract?

I did a run during the festivities and after.... they trashed the place. I've never seen more garbage and flyers and junk everywhere. When I say "they" I mean the people who attended whatever was going on. I usually love when hip hop, rock, alternative, pop, *insert any type of music or any event here* happens downtown because it makes living downtown really cool and fun! Whatever went on that weekend I would be fine with never happening again.

Were you ever around for Freaknik? If you were then you understand what kind of crap...I have no problem with people of any type enjoying my city as long as they have some respect for the people who live here. Many people don't know how to act - that's the problem...and unfortunately this type of gathering has a reputation of disrespect. I'm sure we all realize this.

A few tidbits:
The new CDC building on Buford Highway is topped-off and most of the glass has been installed on the facade. It is about 9 stories depending on how you count (uneven entrances and several below-grade floors).
Work is continuing on 10th street improvements in midtown (wider/nicer sidwalks).
The hilton/homewood hotel at 10th and Williams is esentially finished structurally; the facade is being put in place.
Construction on the pocket park at 18th and W.Peachtree is well underway.
More detailed expansion plans for Piemont Park were just release by the Conservancy.
Utility work is continuing on the downtown streetcar.

Loud music blasting from cars irritate me too. I may even express my displeasure to anyone within earshot. However 2-3 minutes after the car passes me or I pass the car, I am over it. I certainly do not feel compelled to post my irritation in a Construction Thread about Atlanta on a website. There lies my issue and curiosity with the original post. I was not going to respond to the original post until it started to get "Amens".

There are all kinds of ‘irritations’ or ‘inconveniences’ that you may run into living in a diverse city that attracts different folks for different reasons. People that live around the Georgia Dome do not just really enjoy football season when tailgaters bring their noise and trash. Neither do the folk that I know that live near Aaron’s Lakewood Amphitheatre for the broad array of concerts that are held there. If there’s a festival or a concert in a part of town and I do not want to be part of that crowd, I try to limit my visits to that part of town that evening or day. Furthermore, if large crowds and partying folks are attracted to a certain part of town, I would not choose to live in an area where concert halls, night clubs, huge arenas are.

Yes, Hot 107.9 (which caters to Hip Hop / Urban Music) had its annual concert called Birthday Bash at Philips Arena. Yes, young people who attend concerts of any kind of music whether its Hip Hop, Pop, Country, Rock usually get very excited before, during and after the show. The very same night of Birthday Bash concert, I was attending an Anita Baker show in Buckhead at Chastain Park - sipping wine, eating hors d'oeuvre and watching her sing love songs and I got excited. But I do not expect folks who attend Hip Hop / Rock / Pop concert to express their excitement / enthusiasm the same way I do.

At the time I was in Downtown/Midtown after the Anita Baker show (after midnight), Downtown seemed rather tame to me. A perspective somewhat authenticated in that Birthday Bash was nary mentioned in any newscast that I saw or read.

I am not even a big fan of Hip / Hop music or any of today's popular music. Birthday Bash is once a year. Dang, can the kids rent Philips Arena and hold a concert one day out of the year in yall’s world.

“Pardon me for living
This is my world too
I can’t help what’s cool to us
Might not be cool to you”

I'm not sure what weekend that was or what was going on. One thing is for certain though, it could've been this bad: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oW6Aqpco7dg&feature=relmfu

I remember Freknik very well. I think the problem was the fact that the city didn't get behind it. The original business model for Freaknik was later adopted by South by Southwest. So it could've been a huge success and brought much needed revenue into the city. They already had the number they just failed to organize it.

The Reserve at City Park Brookwood

Acadia is building a lot of townhomes at the end of 26th street in brookwood (low end of buckhead) called the reserve at city park. I snapped a few pics but this does not capture the size of this townhome subdivision.

I like how this complex is connected to the peachtree battle(path/beltline trail).

Most of the townhomes are listed in the low $300's

I was thinking Freaknik was more like the Wagner festival in Bayreuth.
