The new arena will have around 15k capacity when it opens. Long term capable to bump up to 18k by filling in the upper decks in the ends.

Thanks for the pics, CDYXE! It looks like black is the new orange in copycat architectural colouring. And the Holiday Hilton looks absolutely drab in grey, with the black top floor, grey being the greater evil in this one. Oh well.

555 Eastlake is approved? No more red tape? I think that makes 4 major projects approved for construction. 3 along the Broadway/Nutana riverbank and the Knox tower DT. Fingers crossed any of them break ground.

-Broadway office 7(8?) floors
-condo beside it 17 floors
-Knox tower 19 floors
-555 Eastlake 26 floors

555 Eastlake Stats

I'm trying to understand the full height of the Eastlake project:
26 stories = 281 feet
The original proposal was 30 stories = 324 feet

The Nutrien tower (tallest in SK*) is 289 feet. So Eastlake won't be the tallest in SK. But Nutrien is also listed as only 18 stories, and 2nd tallest Renaissance Bulding is 24 stories at 260 feet. So I guess they don't measure stories in absolute units but by levels in the building. (I'm clearly not in construction).

Eastlake from groundlevel at the top of the hill by Nutana School would be closer to 240 feet/ 22 ish stories?

The original rendering from the 2022 proposal looks so awkward in both size and like a 5 year old stacked 3 buildings on itself:

A storey is a count of the number of floors, regardless of the height. Typically, commercial buildings will have higher ceilings so a 'storey' is taller than a residential 'storey'. And it is building dependent as well so one 18 storey residential building will not be the same height as another 18 storey residential building.

Basically, you cannot compare the heights based on the number of storeys, as you have discovered yourself. ;-)

Encouraging news within this announcement on the urgent care centre is confirmation that Ahtahkakoop will "retain the former Pleasant Hill School building and will incorporate it into future development plans."

The gap in floor heights between an office building and an apartment tower used to be huge. They are narrowing as many apartments now have higher ceilings and taller lobbies.

For example in Regina, Roberts Plaza apartment (1972) is 198 feet versus Mosaic Tower (2010) 278 ft. Both are 20 stories.

Prairie Lilly

Thanks for the responses about the definition of a 'storey'.

In other Stoon news. I just got this in my inbox from Prairie Lilly:

"It's with mixed feelings and immense gratitude that we announce our 2025 season will be our last. We can't put into words how much we appreciate all your support, kindness, and encouragement over the past dozen years. We've truly had a great ride, rather cruise, and it's because of all of you, our crews over the years, and our beloved city, Saskatoon. From the bottom of our hearts - thank you.

Now, that doesn't necessarily mean The Prairie Lily actually has to retire. It's really us - Captain Mike and Joan - who are retiring. Anyone want a riverboat?

We hope a new owner will come forward and keep The Lily on the river. Curious? You can find more information on our website."

I really hope they can find a new operator, although that is a pretty specialized niche! We take a cruise at least every couple of years and it is always on our "must do" list when entertainiing guests from out of the city. It seems to be quite busy, but have no idea what the business model and revenue for something like that would be.

Fingers crossed we don't lose this special attraction in Saskatoon.

I'm not sure if it's been mentioned on here yet either but residents near Broadway Bridge have received notice from the city that they will be closing the bridge next summer for 'approx 7 months' along with sections of 4th Av South and 19th st to do extensive rehabilitation and 4 platforms to be installed on Broadway Av for the BRT.

My understanding is this work includes reconfiguration of 4th & 19th into more of a "T" shaped signalized intersection at the foot of the bridge that will also improve walking/cycling connectivity with the bridge.

Prairie Lily

I looked on their website. Lots of info about the operations but nothing about costs year over year (unless I missed it?). Kind of important to at least have an order of magnitude on this rather than making potential suitors guess. This isn't a typical operation after all.

Thanks for the heads up! I live in the Varsity View neighborhood and use the Broadway bridge almost daily (walking, biking or driving). Will likely switch to Traffic Bridge, but that may be impacted as well if 19th Street is having work done???

I am also curious if there are any renderings for what the LINK "platforms" will look like? I certainly hope that they are 'winter friendly'.

If anyone has been to Kelowna, I am sure you must have noticed their striking bus platforms. If only.....

RE civic election

I would encourage everyone to reach out to their respective Ward candidates to ask for their position on some key development issues that are often discussed on here. In my Ward (Varsity View) our incumbent is running for Mayor, so we will have a new representative.

I had received in a mailbox drop, flyers from 2 of the 3 candidates running. Their promo material was kind of full of platitudes, and no real answers. So, I sent them both emails asking for their positions on:

- DEED
- Active Transportation (bike lanes)
- increased density in Core neighborhoods (specific to LINK routes)
- balance of core/suburban development

Although their promo material appeared at first glance quite similar, their answers to my emails were quite different. So, I now know better who I would want to vote for.

I encourage everyone on here to also reach out if you have any strong opinions on how Saskatoon should grow and what our city needs for the future.

Most importantly....just vote!!! It will certainly be a different city council this time around with all the Wards that are open for new reps!

Does anyone have the site plans for this, I remember seeing it but can’t seem to find it anywhere. Thanks

CBC 1980's - Should Saskatoon build a new arena downtown

CBC news clip from the five years ago on YouTube. It takes about seven seconds before the video begins.

I'll take a look later, but I seem to recall seeing the plans for it as being part of the broader plans for the festival site at Friendship Park rather than the BRT plan.

You're absolutely right. It's on page 45 of this PDF:
