With the Dunsmuir tunnel — getting cell phone access in the tunnel is certainly something that SkyTrain is aware of, but I haven’t heard of any concrete plans to move forward with that right now. With other systems moving to providing that access, and the Canada Line doing so too, I surmise that this might be explored more in the future. You both might really want to submit your comments to Customer Relations as well, since that is our formal system for tracking and responding to customer feedback. Your comments will get recorded into the system and the appropriate person at SkyTrain will be able to hear what you’d like to see in the system.

I usually have a signal in the Dunsmuir tunnel. Personally, I'm a fan of NOT having cell access. Sure, it's convenient, but people with phones can be so rude, yelling into their phones.

Wi-Fi is fine, though.

Well I think we need to get into the culture of only using phones on transit for texting and internet. In Tokyo, you're not allowed to talk on the phone on trains.

You're "allowed" but it's not culturally acceptable and just not done. EVERYONE emails though. It's also not acceptable to put on make-up on the train.

Near priority seats, phones are not allowed to be ON, as they may interfere with pacemakers or hearing aids, I guess.

Very true, i find people talking on their phones on the train and buses to be rude and annoying. Text only.

I don't find people on their phones to be rude. It's the loud, lengthy conversations that I find rude and annoying, as you can imagine.

Texting can be incredibly annoying. Especially when I am out with friends and they're constantly checking and replying to messages on their phones.

Where did you find out that cells will work on the Canada Line tunnels?

I called Fido and the rep said they don't know anything about that. And they said there isn't any way for them to find out about signal on a metro system that's underground...they can only find out about places using a postal code...though he said the problem varies with each phone.

I am quite bothered that I never have reception in the skytrain tunnels Downtown currently...I think it is very important to be able to stay connected especially on the Canada Line where such a long section is underground!

Thanks for the updates! Also, does it really kill people not to be connected for 5 minutes riding the downtown portion of the skytrain? I find it funny how lost some people become just because their cell phone has no bars! Again, in Japan there are actually signs saying not to use your cell phone while riding the train, and somehow their lives and businesses survive! hehe

i was in a restaurant one day a girl walked in on her phone, sat down alone, went to the buffet with her cell glued to her head, got food, sat down talked th whole time while eating and left the place still on the phone

No, there are actual signs at least on the JR trains with a cell phone under the international No sign.

I'm a little indifferent about cell phone use on public transit. Sometimes people can be quite annoying, sometimes I don't mind at all. Sometimes I find listening an entertaining way to pass the time! For me, the longer they talk the more annoying it can potentially be, but mostly it is more about the personality of the talker that determines whether or not it bothers me. For me, one of the most annoying types of people to listen to is the young, ditzy "high school" girl. The type that says "like" and "oh my god" every other second, talks loud, says things that make themselves sound ridiculously ignorant about the world around them, etc.

I don't think it should be banned because sometimes it is just really necessary to contact somebody quickly on the go like when you have somebody who is trying to meet up with you on the same bus but they're getting on at a different stop, for one example. It doesn't happen that often but when it does texting can be too slow to get the job done right. Personally I don't like using my phone on the bus because I'm too self conscious and aware of everyone around me listening to my every word.

Yep. And I was traveling with a friend in Tokyo who actually got told off (nicely) by a local. That said, many Japanese will be sitting on the subway using their phones for messaging or access the Internet.

I think use of cellphones on transit is a bit related to what culture you're in. In HK, everyone uses their phone on the MTR, and generally it doesn't bother me. In fact, I find it irritating in places like London where the tube has no signal underground (and candidly, after the events of 7/7, it's a bit unsettling, too. What if there's an emergency?

I only have an issue with those who can't be bothered to speak at an appropriate volume. Otherwise, why should I care if someone is talking on a cellphone?

I was on the 99 B-Line and had an emergency and had to talk on the phone. There was no other option. But I also use headphones and talk as quiety as I can.

Telus and Bell should send those out to their customers to turn on in their apartment buildings so that more people switch over.

That's only 20m range with no obstruction. It wouldn't even affect anybody outside your apartment.
Plus, doesn't list 3G 1900,GSM1900, and parts of GSM 850 which is what Rogers/Fido use. Not to mention getting caught with such a device would get you in quite the legal trouble with Industry Canada if they have proof you imported/used it.
