I couldn't agree more. That's one of my main beefs with MetLofts retail space as well. It's set back behind columns, and below sidewalk grade. Makes the retail spaces seem much darker and less inviting.

In both cases, the retail should be brought up flush with the outer walls, no setbacks.

Palm trees wouldn't look horrible there but smaller, greener trees would be better.

And like everyone else, I agree that the retail portion of LA Live appears to be a bit dark. But considering how LA Live will be more alive at night, I don't think it'll matter all that much.

I know, during the daytime it looks so....empty.

I want shade trees, both for the shade, and to cover up more of the building . I dont like those big round columns. They are so boring...they need to wrap them in light or something

What we need.....is more small signs in front of the retail that light up at night.

I see Westsidelife's point about this being a heavy traffic area and "why put a barrier in the middle of heavy traffic".

However, I see this as possibly helping the flow of pedestrian traffic. It appears the sidewalk space on both sides of the trees in the middle is the same size. (someone should take a picture where I put the red spot to see if that is true). If that's true, then the trees in the middle will act as a traffic divider. Pedestrian will gravitate to the right (just like car traffic) when volume is heavy in both directions. This landscape plan has the advantage of allowing more trees ( I'm all for that) and helping control foot traffic, that is until somebody trips on that rake.

It'll be Homer Simpson who trips on it (see 'Cape Fear' episode).

Well..I'm glad that it isn't a typical Vancouver style condo building. It'll be interesting to see this complete.

Now that I think about it the trees will look fine ... As long as they stick with the same style trees further below.....NO Palm trees.... maybe a couple

I like the trees a lot. We need WAY MORE trees in Downtown LA in general. And not Ficcus either. Downtown LA feels like a concrete jungle and it's not a good feeling.

Everything grows in southern California. It's a shame the city doesn't utilize such perfect climate. I don't know why developers use the same selection of trees over and over. Even freeway landscapers have more imagination.

My guess is that since LA Live takes many of it's exterior design elements from Staples, they will continue the pattern of whatever kind of trees those are in front of Staples where every third tree is a palm.

It might be a bit much, but I wouldn't mind seeing some Jacaranda trees downtown. The blooms are beautiful, albeit messy, and they provide shade but aren't as dense as ficcus trees, which tend to create really dark streets at night by blocking out the street lights.

Though it would be really cool if downtown created a tree guideline by street, kind of like Beverly Hills has, where certain species of trees line one street all the way up.

i like the idea of jacaranda trees lining grand ave up to the grand park. it would reinforce the idea of trying to make grand ave a classy thoroughfare
