I'm very impressed with this development. If this, and the coast guard site project both get built, this will radically change the downtown SJ waterfront immensely......

You boys down there will just have to put those longshoremen in their place, it's almost the 2010's for cripes sake, not the 1950's!!

Anyone know why they still use tents next to the cruise ship welcome centre? Didn't they make it big enough?

They have a "Dockside Market" in them.

Nature preserve opening Monday

A new nature preserve in Millidgeville will officially open on Monday. The 27-hectare tract of land on the shores of the lower St. John River has been donated to the Nature Trust of New Brunswick by the provincial government. The official opening of the Boars Head Nature Preserve is set for 10 a.m. Monday at the Hatheway Pavilion at Lily Lake.

Imagine how big the tract could've been without Cedar Point's recent expansions.

Not to be rude, but i couldnt care less about the "Preservation" I actually live in the area and I'd rather see more new upscale homes rather than woods. If i want to see woods I can go to Fundy Park..

If you've ever sailed on the Saint John river compared to other places you'll notice one staggering thing:

Compared to places, say in, Nova Scotia, which have large built-up homes with waterfront access and views, Saint John has none of this. At. All. Look at a place like Chester Nova Scotia or even south of Halifax by the Royal Yacht Club, and it's all built up on the waterfront. Saint John has nothing compared to this at all.

Worked well for my family. We dont have to be surrounded with poverty and have to watch our every move in our own area.

There isn't really a correlation between density and crime. There are plenty of safe urban areas and tons of 'dangerous' suburban ones.

One thing that sprawl does create is more sprawl. Spreading the same number of people over a larger area means services become more expensive, traffic becomes worse etc.

Anybody who even dares to post a positive comment is beat down. I really think it sucks that we still have a significant portion of the city base who want to return to the 1960's ans '70's. It's sad.
It is not a "significant portion" of the population, it is a very, very small minority who are obviously not working while sitting in front of their computers all day slamming the Irving family in any way they can. I think you're right, it is the union bully mentality that if they should loud enough and ignore logic and good sense they think they "win". There is no merit to any argument that the Long Wharf development is bad for the City. It is a huge positive to have a building like that built in our uptown area, regardless of who builds it. The old school blue collar mentality is moving out of Saint John and that is good news for progress and our future. Of course you have a few loudmouths left to blather on, but in time they will fade as well and we can get moving on making our City even better.

As a note on the nature preserve on Boars Head:

The Irving's own all of the land in that area, and once they built their million-dollar home they donated all of the surrounding land so that it could be classified as a nature preserve, thus preventing anyone from building around them. I hope the City understands the amount of tax revenue that could have been generated from the properties in that area.

A lot of land owners set up preserves to set up privacy buffers and not have to hold onto the land, and pay the taxes. It's pretty common in Charlotte County.

I have not posted in a long time, but I had to comment on this as it is completely incorrect and most likely fabricated by someone who doesn't like the Irvings. I am not saying 'GregHickman' fabricated it, but whomever started this originally. I live very near the property in question and the very small bordering area was not donated by the Irvings. It was setup before they even bought their piece of land and extends along ALL properties in Anchorage estates that face the water. This is because legislation dictates that an easement must exist along the waters edge of a certain number of feet.

The Irving home will have plenty of space on all sides if it because he purchased 10-12 building lots. If he had not purchased them, other homes would have been built there. If anything, his ability to purchase multiple lots (for a very large sum of money) saved many trees that would have been clearcut for building.

Which Irving home? J D Irving, Jack Irving, Jim Irving, Arthur Irving, Kenneth Irving, Arthur Junior, John Irving. Actually the house at Cedar Point is John Irving's.

Air Canada: Short-Term Capacity Increase

Quote:
Air Canada Jazz will be adding additional seats between Toronto and Saint John over the holiday season. Starting Wednesday, Dec.16 and continuing until Wednesday, Dec. 23, flight#8948, arriving at 5:24 p.m. from Toronto, and flight #8951 departing Saint John at 6:00 p.m. will both be served using a 70-seat CRJ, providing an additional 20 seats per flight, and a total of 280 additional seats over the holidays. www.saintjohnairport.com
... looks like a number of those flights are near capacity, even with the extra seats. If these fill, who knows, it might provide incentive to test out larger aircraft on the Saint John - Toronto route more often.

Didn't we have a discussion on a possible SJ airport expansion over a year ago? I remember posting a pic of an elevated 'jetway' for some reason. I wonder if it is the airport's plans to ever add one of these as well as a 2nd-storey gate.

According to their last annual report they have a terminal expansion and the reconfiguration of short/long-term parking in the pipeline. Diagrams were included on page 8 of the last annual report found here: http://saintjohnairport.com/corporate/reports.asp
