The station is very similar to the one shown in Human Desire...but, as far as I can tell, it isn't the same one.

The gas station in 'Human Desire' doesn't have the stepped tiers on top.

Eh, I grew up in Southern CA, what's a basement? Yes, I've heard of the whole house vacuum, we didn't have one and I don't think they worked all that well.

The intercom had a central panel in the kitchen and you'd select what room you'd want to call from there and then press down on a lever to talk and the sound would goto speaker/mic panel in the room you selected. The person in that room could also press down on the lever to talk to you. It had a central unit that had lots of tubes that seemed to blow out a lot and my dad got tired of replacing them, so I don't remember it being used past maybe 1966 or 67.

Did I mention how bad the pic was, it's really bad. The speaker/mic panel is on top and the switches to control where the signal goes is the panel on the bottom, both to the left of your humble commenter.

When I initially looked at the photo below..I thought it was of a French restaurant named Paulette's Brasserie

Which looks a little like this picture posted here. I looked at the edges and the slope of the roof and am thinking "maybe"? So few old buildings remain on this part of Long Beach Blvd. Although it says Seville Ave it could be that in those days it was configured differently? Oh, I love Replacement Killers. I have watched it more times than I can remember (or want to admit). I didn't include a shot from it in my post because I sometimes feel that my LA filming locations obsession isn't universally shared here and didn't want to overdo it.

TRK is a great LA locations movie, and is actually set in LA, unlike "Se7ven". In TRK, Union Station plays LAX :-)

My ex-boyfriend years ago lived in a house in Huntington Beach for a short time that had a whole-house vacuum. I had never seen or heard of such a thing until I went to that house. It didn't work all that well, but it sure was nice not having to haul a vacuum cleaner from room to room. Instead we had to haul the hose attachment from room to room.

My parent's house had an intercom. They replaced it once. Here's the last one that was in the house when we sold it.

We hardly used that intercom. People who came to visit sure did like to use it. Particularly my cousins. It was a fun toy for them.

ETA: Actually, Mom used the intercom the most for just the radio function. She could tune a station on the main intercom pictured above and set to play over select house speakers. She liked to put it on one of the outside speakers when she was gardening or doing yard work because then she didn't have to carry a portable radio outside.

I'd be interested to know what Paulette's style and script were - the four adverts above use four different typefaces for her logo. If anyone's interested, my best guesses are:

1954 Park Avenue
1966 Coronet Bold
1970 Brush Script
1972 Something close to Mayfair
