Tell us more. That's really cool BGC.

There was a house in my hometown, built about the same time as yours, that had a built-in vacuum.
All a person had to do was attach the vacuum hose to round outlets in the wall.
The basement, no doubt, was home to some sort of sucking mechanism.

YES! that's it GW. Thank you.

The station is very similar to the one shown in Human Desire...but, as far as I can tell, it isn't the same one.

The gas station in 'Human Desire' doesn't have the stepped tiers on top.

There is an interesting railroad blog called Obscure Train Movies, that discusses the locations in 'Human Desire'. (but not the stock reel)

Eh, I grew up in Southern CA, what's a basement? Yes, I've heard of the whole house vacuum, we didn't have one and I don't think they worked all that well.

The intercom had a central panel in the kitchen and you'd select what room you'd want to call from there and then press down on a lever to talk and the sound would goto speaker/mic panel in the room you selected. The person in that room could also press down on the lever to talk to you. It had a central unit that had lots of tubes that seemed to blow out a lot and my dad got tired of replacing them, so I don't remember it being used past maybe 1966 or 67.

Here's a really, really bad pic taken with a disc camera of the unit in the kitchen:

Scan-140816-0012.jpg by BillinGlendaleCA, on Flickr

Did I mention how bad the pic was, it's really bad. The speaker/mic panel is on top and the switches to control where the signal goes is the panel on the bottom, both to the left of your humble commenter.

I like the photograph Bill. (why are you looking at the side of your cell phone like that? )

When I initially looked at the photo below..I thought it was of a French restaurant named Paulette's Brasserie

"Vintage 1950s Paulette's On Woodman & Oxnard Los Angeles California Photo."

EBAY

but on closer inspection the sign doesn't say Brasserie at all....it says Brassieres!

DETAIL

which led to this article...

link coming

which eventually led me to this...

having trouble finding the links again / found all this last night

Here's our first look at Paulette Firestone. (the back of her head actually)

DETAIL

Paulette's real name is Paulette Florence Bennett. (but then her trail went cold )

You get a better look at Paulette here.

Whoo Boy...now that's what I call a Sewing Circle!

All the images are from a 1953 issue of Adam Magazine. (I'll add the link once I find it again)

BACK TO THE TOP: Does anyone know if the building (ebay photograph) is still standing?

Well, I've never owned an iPhone(I currently have a Note 8), but I'll have you know that was a top of the line device in 1989.

(Kids these days(adjusts the onion on my belt)).

ETA: I still have that Kodak Pocket Instamatic and I think that shot's still in the camera.

I believe it's still there, the RR tracks are now the Orange Line and there's a similar building just north of the Orange Line on Woodman.

(I have no idea how to post Google Street Views.)

ETA: It looks like they added onto the building to extend into the parking lot pictured in ER's photo, The one story house across and down Woodman looks the same.

An advert in the December 4, 1950 edition of The Van Nuys News gives the address of Paulette's Custom Made Training Brassieres as 12322 Ventura Boulevard, Studio City (not the place in the picture). The advert also includes the following:
MUSCLE CONTROL
  • DEVELOPS SMALL BUST
  • REJUVENATES AVERAGE BUST
  • LIFTS UP SAGGING BUST
With the "magic cups" of Paulette's Custom Made Brassiere, the pectoral muscles of the breast are controlled and contoured into a youthful uplifted line. You can absolutely do away with all types of "FALSIES" and in most cases immediately have a larger Bust Measurement. An improperly fitted "Bra" will break down the breast muscles PAULETTE'S BRA is a proven healthy support for the Breasts and you are invited to take it to your doctor for approval.

Somewhat surprisingly, Paula Firestone has a brief listing at IMDB

This is one of the two films she worked on.

HEAVENLY BODIES 1963.

imdb

The other film, Erotica...is for the Bon Vivant" [1961] had the tag-line "Ablaze with Pulchritude!"

This is interesting....I've never heard of 'Walnut Park' before.

Good afternoon. I may be soooo wrong here, but driving around Walnut Park i came across this building, https://www.flickr.com/photos/vidaya...posted-public/
Which looks a little like this picture posted here. I looked at the edges and the slope of the roof and am thinking "maybe"? So few old buildings remain on this part of Long Beach Blvd. Although it says Seville Ave it could be that in those days it was configured differently? I know that a few posts later ethereal_reality put up ariel maps of old Walnut Park. http://harrymarnell.net/palmplsky.jpg
Anyway, enough of me chatting away, like the old lady that i am..goodnight.

Oh, I love Replacement Killers. I have watched it more times than I can remember (or want to admit). I didn't include a shot from it in my post because I sometimes feel that my LA filming locations obsession isn't universally shared here and didn't want to overdo it.

TRK is a great LA locations movie, and is actually set in LA, unlike "Se7ven". In TRK, Union Station plays LAX :-)

My ex-boyfriend years ago lived in a house in Huntington Beach for a short time that had a whole-house vacuum. I had never seen or heard of such a thing until I went to that house. It didn't work all that well, but it sure was nice not having to haul a vacuum cleaner from room to room. Instead we had to haul the hose attachment from room to room.

My parent's house had an intercom. They replaced it once. Here's the last one that was in the house when we sold it.

Intercom by Kimberly, on Flickr

We hardly used that intercom. People who came to visit sure did like to use it. Particularly my cousins. It was a fun toy for them.

ETA: Actually, Mom used the intercom the most for just the radio function. She could tune a station on the main intercom pictured above and set to play over select house speakers. She liked to put it on one of the outside speakers when she was gardening or doing yard work because then she didn't have to carry a portable radio outside.

More on the "Wizard of Bras" (now that is kind of clever...)

Her latter-day tagline is pretty good, but Paulette definitely wasn't springing for any new photography for her ads...a series in the Times, 1954-1972:

Oct 31, 1954/April 5, 1966/October 12, 1972

And you have to love "WHY BE 'D'-Void? You can be D-DEVINE...D-DELIGHTFUL...."

"Defendants have copied Plaintiff's style and script..."

I'd be interested to know what Paulette's style and script were - the four adverts above use four different typefaces for her logo. If anyone's interested, my best guesses are:

1954 Park Avenue
1966 Coronet Bold
1970 Brush Script
1972 Something close to Mayfair
