In all reality prairieboy, the length of your third post here is sort of telling.

nice to see you have beef with the city, but you're in Grand Prairie man. Thinking of Edmonton or Calgary, good for you. American cities, good for you.

But I hate to tell you, Calgary & Edmonton while bustling cities are still "on par" with Winnipeg. I also live in Calgary, when not in Winnipeg, and if the American cities you're looking at are named "Boston" or "New York City", or "San Francisco" then you have won yourself an argument, and I fear Winnipeg would never match such urban flare

But if you're comparing Calgary as a city with better "urban flare" than Winnipeg, then its a matter of perception. As hotwired nicely put it: high rises, young communities with tons of freeway interchanges and all that jazz are nice, but Winnipeg is a different beast. Old grungy urban areas, soul filled neighbourhoods, arts & culture on a level Calgary might not ever even match...I think its a matter of perception, and personal preferences.

So good on you, if thats the choice you make.

Just be a little more distinct about your thoughts before you come in and start posting a bunch. Its not "here's what I think subjectively and with some tunnel vision, too bad if you sensitive Winnipeggers can't accept these apparent subjective 'truths'.." if you simply went about your posts better. I'm not the only poster who picked up on this, no one is trying to flame you, but its not very classy to just come in and posture form that position like that.

I mean, in three posts, its pretty evident you have some other beef. Shows you care about the city too, which is good. I think everyone wants to see Winnipeg progress even more. But its going at the pace its going, and its actually booming better than it has been in over 2 decades. In some ways, the current trajectory might be its best since the 60s.
LOL, Calgary does not have the character Winnipeg has (I lived there from 2000 to 2003), but Winnipeg doesn't have the character Montreal has. Anyway, I could see myself moving back there to live in Kensington or the Beltline, which are hip neighborhoods, with a lot of energy and great vibe. Also, Calgary does not have the decrepit neighborhoods Winnipeg does. People ignore just how many large pockets of Winnipeg are less than desireable: Elmwood, west end, north end, north Main...

I would be happy to agree that Calgary is the poster city for sprawl: UGLY!!!

heritage landing is delayed because of a 60,000 kv line that runs through the property and hydro needs to move a bunch of equipment on the site that takes logistics and planning

mpi and convention center are still in planing phases be paient............ and usualy when u see a design theres been months of planing and work allready put into somthing by the time we see a rendering.......

There is a fair bit of construction in the city, perhaps not as much as Grand Prairie though

Wait, what?

I think, coming in to say what you asked, the way you asked, then following up after only one post with this is sort of borderline trolling..its like you are being defensive with no reason to be defensive yet

You could have just asked "whats new in the development front"

or looked at the first page
People like you I restrain myself from punching out. To immediately use "trolling" because someone who is from a city has many concerns about it; not everyone can be satisfied with mediocrity.

Can you imagine the cool condos and apartments the McLaren could be? Ross from CV did not deny or confirm to me, but I think that is one of the buildings the province wants to buy.

@Prairieboy You probably know that a city development and the size of projects reflect that regions economy, population and demand for such projects. With AB oil industry MB simply cannot compete nor are we trying to. You left WPG and now turn around and try and start a dick measuring contest that no one on this board want to be apart of then say "i don't mean to offend anyone"... let me try your tactics... I don't mean to offend you but most people i know that moved to Grand Prairie couldn’t hack it anywhere else.
Nah, they moved for better paycheques. In case you do not know, Manitoba still has the lowest wages west of Quebec, according to Stats Can. People leave for a better life, and they find it in Edmonton, Calgary, Red Deer, GP...

BTW, I do not get offended.

True, artists are known for injecting life into an area. That would be great. There is a lack of affordable space for artists.

Another great building is the former Watkins warehouse on Annabella. What a handsome building, which would be great for artists. I just do not want to see it gutted. It is disgusting when developers rip out the soul of a building (elevators, stairs, etc). Nothing beats riding in a freight elevator.

OMG, can u imagine living in that? Damn!

I heard that the cage elevators at the former Union Bank were replaced, but they will use the pieces around the building? That sickens me: they should have been left in operation. It is not a 60 storey building where you need high speed elevators. At least the beautiful staircase was restored.

Most people already touched on Prairieboy's posts, but I wanted to mention a few things. The most prominent residential highrises that have gone up in the last few years (the Icons and Quest) are architectural monstrosities and their most dense neighbourhood (Oliver) has as much street life as Provencher. There is a very small design community (and no school of Arch) there that leads to many mediocore projects. There is more development happening in Edmonton because it is a much larger city, but I believe the quality of projects we're seeing and the bones that Winnipeg already has make it a much more interesting city.

I find Calgary boring and devoid of charachter, but I grew up in Edmonton hating the Flames and Calgary.

Do you measure how "good" your life is by how much money you make?

it must sure be awful to be younger than 18 (and unemployed) or a university student.

Winnipeg doesn't compare to Montreal. Okay. How is that supportive of (what I think) your point is? Calgary doesn't even compare to Montreal! And yet arguably Winnipeg has more in similar with Montreal than it does with Calgary even though it's closer in size to Calgary. Are you aware of the population discrepancy between Winnipeg and Montreal?

Additionally I don't know what your point is regarding Kensington as it relates with your original posts. You'll have to explain that, because your criticsms of Winnipeg - while entirely valid for you - are somewhat negated by comparing the most "Winnipeg like" area in Calgary.

Kensington is awesome btw, no disagreement I live close there but you're not very clear in your criticism of the city. I also was pretty clear myself in "no one is trying to flame" you, there is discussion to be had on this topic.

...which is also why you should chill out. You feel like punching me? Wow. Let me explain a few things: I didn't call you a troll, I said it APPEARED as BORDERLINE trolling. You know what the term means right? Its not just the negative stereotype associated with it. I mean, think about how you came into this thread. You literally didn't have to call out people on this board as it you know how everyone is, very presumptive on your part. I think that you took such sensitivity to my post (perhaps poor choice of words on my part as well) isn't what I was trying to imply. But considering Hotwired has had probably one of the best responses to your criticisms, while adding and directing towards constructive discussion, and you have not addressed them, seemingly complaining (from my POV) can you at least understand how it may come across to me as BORDERLINE?

you're saying some very opinionated things in your posts so I hope you can see how it's coming across considering the way you entered this discussion.

Perhaps reflect on that before you feel like punching people out and consider how you might have made other such as myself suggest that.

I'm not going into Calgary's construction thread presuming their posters and lamenting about how it's not the most booming skyscraper city and drawing a comparison to Toroto, for example

Regardless of size, Montreal has more character because of various forces (political, social, etc). Take a look at what Main Street and Portage looked like in 1900; looked similar to Montreal. We have allowed amazing gems to vanish, reducing our downtown to what it is today. People rejoice over the Exchange District, but that is a small part of the massive downtown we have that is hideous. To see what the Trizec and Richardson buildings replaced is heart wrenching. Main Street was quite the dense street from Higgins to Broadway, but past governments allowed it to be destroyed. Portage from Main to Memorial was an amazing stretch of exceptional architecture back in the day, especially the first several blocks west of Main. You want smaller than Montreal? How about Charlottetown? It is absolutely charming. So is St. John, NB.

The reference was in response to Calgary's lack of character. Kensington is among the few areas I would live that are rich with character and vibrancy.

I think Calgary would be very lucky to receive one of the many exciting projects seen in Toronto. Nothing wrong with saying that.
