Really? I think of Moores as bigger in the suburbs, though Tip Top certainly has presence and feels the more "established" of the two, generally located in the malls rather than the newer power centres.

Mid market suit guys are getting killed becuase mid level jobs no longer require suits.

Those who wear suits daily generally are making well into the 6 figures, where as high 5 figure/ low six figure jobs who would previously have worn suits daily no longer do. That was their bread and butter.

^ Yep. Nowadays, probably 90% or more of men only need a handful of suits total to wear on a few days of the year for special occasions. When you're like that you can buy a suit maybe once every decade.

It's very early on but if successful Hudson's Bay revenue would zoom to roughly $41 billion based on 2016 numbers for HBC and Macy's.

Quote:
Hudson’s Bay making bid to take over Macy’s

Hudson’s Bay. Co. appears to be continuing its aggressive international growth with reports it’s eyeing another American retailer, Macy’s Inc. As of April 2, 2016, the company operates about 870 stores across the United States as well as Guam and Puerto Rico, according to Macy’s website. In August, the company announced it would close about 100 locations.

HBC, founded in 1670, has made a number of acquisitions in recent years.

In 2013, HBC announced it struck a deal to acquire Saks Inc. for $2.9 billion (U.S.), including debt. The acquisition allowed it to bring the luxury retailer Saks and its discount brand Saks Off 5th to Canada. Since then, HBC has opened two Saks locations and nine Saks Off 5th stores in the country, with many more planned.

HBC also purchased Galeria Kaufhof, the largest department store chain in Germany and Belgium, for $3.9 billion in 2015 as part of a major overseas expansion plan. It plans to open 40 Saks Off 5th discount stores in Germany and up to 20 new stores in the Netherlands, under the Hudson’s Bay and Saks Off 5th banners.

Too bad Hudson Bay is an American Company. Or at least owned by one.

Isn't Hudson Bay publically traded?

Yup. It's a Canadian Company that was at one time owned by an American billionaire but, he died. His wife sold it to an American private equity group that eventually took it public.

HBC is based in Toronto and run from Toronto. By your logic, Columbia Pictures is a Japanese studio and Jaguar Land Rover is an Indian auto maker.

It's a moot point as we don't know what percentage of the public offering (IIRC, 60% of the company) was gobbled up by Canadian institutions. I imagine it being very high.

Well at the very least you know 18% is owned by OTPP, and a further 9% by West Face Capital, both Canadian.

Not sure how much Richard Baker owns but I think it's a substantial holding as well.

Regardless the jobs and operations are primarily Canadian so I would qualify it as a Canadian company.

I stand "somewhat" corrected. I thought they were still owed by the American Billionaire.

Sunrise Records will take over the leases of 70 HMV (out of around 100) locations across Canada.
A list of stores will be available once the leases are signed.

This sounds like a mistake that Target made once upon a time.

They sure are moving a lot of earth for that development.

I think it's ironic that IKEA - a furniture company that is probably one of the biggest symbols of a downscaled urban lifestyle, and "Europeanness" - exclusively builds its stores in the most sprawling, auto-dependent suburban locations imaginable.

I get that each store is also a self-serve warehouse, but a lot of people come in to IKEA to buy small household items. They could just have an "IKEA lite" for urbanites who want to buy bathmats or plates from the showroom, and give customers the option to order the larger furniture for delivery.

That's somewhat similar to what they're rolling out over the next while, though not for the benefit of "urbanites". Their plan was to open "IKEA lites" in markets they deem too small for a full-scale IKEA and stock them with ~100 of the most popular items, but to also have a show room and the ability to order in-store/online other items not normally kept on-hand in the warehouse.

I kind of forgot about that announcement... wonder where they're at with that.
