The connecting north and east upper deck was constructed like that due to the State's CVC from the LBJ Library. In addition to the CVC, in order to mimic the west side upper deck on the east side, they would have had to relocate Robert Dedman Drive (as previously mentioned). Also, this closing and/or realignment would have affected Myers Stadium.
Back in the mid-1990's, the masterplan for the stadium was to completely wrap the south end zone with stands that identically mimicked the north end zone (as seen today). I was a student intern in the University's fundraising department at that time. The plan, back then, was to have a total seating capacity of about 115,500. The north end zone expansion was completed in 2008 (as previously mentioned) and the original masterplan for the south end zone began to evolve.
