I honestly think that wouldn't have been so reviled if the actually went for a more subtle hue.
The building's form isn't objectionable to me.

Apropos of this thread, DTB couldn't possibly have received a better tallest style-wise than this. It woud find just as welcome a home in Downtown Manhattan, but there it is.

The only wait-and-see issue for me is how she will really blend with her present (and proposed) neighbors.

Dime Savings Bank’s Historic Facade Remains as Additions Demo’d to Prep for First Supertall

In Downtown Brooklyn, workers are preparing to fuse Brooklyn’s first supertall skyscraper to the one of the borough’s most iconic structures.

A chunk of the facade of the famed, landmarked Dime Savings Bank building is standing on its own as prep work continues in advance of
the construction of Brooklyn’s first supertall skyscraper at 9 Dekalb Avenue, aka 340 Flatbush Avenue Extension.

The new tower, from developers Chetrit Group and JDS Development Group and designer SHoP Architects, will alter the skyline of Brooklyn
and change the feel of historically low-rise Downtown Brooklyn, bringing the borough one step closer to Manhattan-like density and height.

....The bank building is landmarked both inside and out, unusually, and will be preserved and integrated into the new skyscraper. Most recently
a branch of JP Morgan Chase, the building will become four stories of retail and office space for a single future tenant.

The design for 340 Flatbush has an unusual shape inspired in part by the hexagonal footprint of the Dime Savings Bank. The dark vertical lines
of the building also echo some of the bank’s architectural details.

You are correct. Steinway in design, 53W53 in quality (though they both could fit that quality bill).

Eh, This building is a modern GE building or Tribune Tower. The spikes on the top and the hexagonal form is what suggests the resemblance to me.

Given so many old buildings are torn down wanton without regard for heritage or preserving their facades, I think more classically inspired buildings like this should be done. NY needs to make up for their heinously lax landmarks board that allows beauties like the Bancroft, the Trinity Tower Building, and the rows of beauties on 57th street to be torn down for boring glass boxes.

We dont need a park or a plaza. Junior's should have sold and reopened in the base of the this gorgeous tower. The site would have allowed for the lower say 20 floors of the tower to broaden out and fill the site. It could have been executed gorgeously by SHoP and I think would have produced an even better tower.

Maybe. It's not happening at this point, though. The Rowe isn't being redesigned. Demolition and transformation to some kind of plaza still could. Probably better than some tacked on appendage as an afterthought at this point. I suppose it would be reclad and integrated with the tower even now, with the roof used as an outdoor space. But none of these things really seem likely. It will probably just remain.

if juniors had caved and sold out it would not have changed the tower, just the base.

as they don't own the juniors building, nothing is going to happen with it.
