I was staring at that exact wall this morning and could not grasp what I was actually looking at. That is complete ugliness and just plain cheap, lazy, and downright pathetic. On a related note, next time you are near Merkley Supply, check out the back of the yard along Bayview. They have a stockpile of those bricks. Maybe we need someone with a few flatbeds and a forklift overnight to rid Ottawa of those bricks.

It's growing on me as it gets more completed. Looks very much like mid IKEA inspired developments you see in Europe which is a big improvement over the other Claridge projects and 160 George. East Market complex has really aged well as has 90 George to a lesser extent.

I think the bricks for the Zibi builds were laid, at least Aalto's were.

Actual bricks vs panels tells us a lot about the developer and the quality of the build.

Makes sense why it looks European. In Northern Europe at least it seems to be all prefab panels. Even higher end buildings. I don't think it looks worse than "actual" brick though prefer the terracotta style you see more in Europe but I guess brick is luxury here.

I stand corrected. I just went on one of our commercial sites. Some projects use prefab panels, but most don't.

Edit: I'm spending some time on commercial jobsites, I will update with common brick applications once I have learned more. Deleting misinformation from my posts.

Section of westbound Rideau Street in downtown Ottawa to be closed on Oct. 13-15

Staff Reporter, Ottawa Citizen
Published Oct 07, 2023 • Last updated 3 hours ago • 1 minute read

A one-block westbound section of Rideau Street downtown will be closed for approximately 48 hours starting next Friday, the City of Ottawa announced Friday.

The affected area will extend west from the intersection of Rideau and King Edward Avenue.

The closure is required to allow for dismantling of a construction crane that has been in place at 245 Rideau St., the city’s notice said.

Sign-marked detours will be in place during the closure period.

Westbound on Rideau:
• Turn right on King Edward Avenue
• Turn left on York Street
• Turn left on Cumberland Street
• Turn right on Rideau Street

Southbound on King Edward, heading toward Highway 417:
• Turn left on St Patrick Street
• Turn right on the Vanier Parkway
• Use the ramp to access Highway 417.

The first Wild n' Wacky Brick Patterns are going up on the East Wall this morning. Between this and the Silver/Black/Neon Green/Purple sign walls of Envie Rideau, I think we are on our way to having the ugliest single skyline view angle in Canada from Rideau travelling West into the market.

How does a fire alarm gets handled in such type of building? If one happens, all 3 towers + grocery at the ground floor need to be evacuated?

Like why?????? Why do they keep repeating this ugly mix-match random squares and rectangles of charcoal and beige on every project???? It is sooooo ugly.

Do the whole wall charcoal, or the whole wall beige!

Claridge Moon, Royale, Loop are the 3 projects I can think of that all have these random patch designs.

Should we be expecting the same for the Lebreton tower going up right now?? Certainly hope not.

The Lebreton tower going up right now is definitely 110% getting a lovely charcoal brick podium. As for the cladding of the tower, it appears to be white aluminum panels, but we'll see...

As an aside while we wait with baited breath for the cladding to reveal itself...

Does anyone have photos during the Metro demolition? As I posted on the Lebreton Flats page, there were some interesting footings down there from the original buildings on the site.

Here is the fire insurance plan from 1912, you can see the footprint of the block of buildings is roughly the same as the grocery store, where the Queen's Hotel yard became the parking lot and looks like it pretty much stayed that way for 100 years.

I did a quick overlay of the image, and the 'Iron Clad Cobbler' is almost exactly where the southeast corner of the metro was. There were stairs and levels inside Metro basement, with exposed stone walls. Must have been the Woodworking/Paintshop for Iron Clad.
