That's after my 70lb puppy got a hold of it. Came home to find it buried in a magazine he shredded. It was missing both caps, but the hood was still on, I never did find the lens cap. He actually got it out of my sling bag without wrecking the bag. Cleaned about a gallon of drool of the lens and it still works.

I call it my Christmas miracle.

You can download free trials of Lightzone and Bibble. I wouldn't mind checking out Lightroom, but Adobe doesn't support linux with most of their software. Besides, it still costs money. I use GIMP because I prefer to use all legitimately free software, including my operating system.

well... anyways!

so i just learned that were going to new york in may! which means im definitely gonna need a f/2.8 lens! AND a wide angle lens! so im gonna say fuck it to the sb-600, to the Sima 17-70, and get the Tokina right now. Someones selling an used one for 600 bucks on craigslist so i might get that. Then if i can save another 600 bucks I'll get the 70-300VR b/c I NEED a tele!


EDIT: Just kidding! The Tokina just went down in price to 600 bucks new!!! Woo-hoo! gonna order one before they sell out or go up in price! I hope the Tamron 17-50vc goes down to 600 or 550 as well b/c i would much rather get the Tammy than the Sigma.

EDIT 2.0: Woo-hoo! I just checked and I won't get any taxes b/c its out of state! And since I have 850 bucks I can even order the SB-600 which will total to $825.80! Ahh! I'm so exited!

which tokina is this again? 11-16mm? i did want that one, but i learnt it won't autofocus with the d40. good luck with all your lens purchases. must be nice. along with nyc. hope to see a photothread .

Yupp, the 11-16. I might as weel get it now that it's wayyy cheaper.

My 'to get' list as of now:
-tokina 11-16 f/2.8
-tamron 17-50 f/2.8 vc
-nikon 70-300vr (or the sigma 70-200 f/2.8 although I hear that once you pass the 105mm's vr (or some other name for it)helps a lot)
-nikon 50mm 1.8d
-sb-600
-memory cards
-1.5 terrabyte external harddrive

in like a year or so, i have 171 gigabytes of pictures and 97.5 of sketchup and random files.

plus i just wanna back up all my stuff in case something happens. i learned that the hard way

oh! and i forgot to add something to that list: more RAM! I have 4 gigs, but fucking vista takes up like a bigillion out of those 4 gigs. Photoshop takes hellaaaa and so does Photomatix (but thats more of the cores than the RAM). Lightroom is tiny light!

I'd like to upgrade to Win7, anyone here have it?

The hard drive idea is very smart, especially as now the prices are really coming down (and 20 years ago they had computers worth lots that used megabytes to show their space...wow!).

The amount of memory that my computer uses for photos has gone up astronomically in the past year. Luckily other than programs and some processing stuff (Word/Excel) there isn't much else besides photos on my computer. I think eventually I will want a external hard drive just for photos, but I currently share one with all the other stuff on my computer for back up, along with other things.

20 years ago, computers with a megabyte of storage cost, like, $1,540. My computer has only 40GB and when we got it people found that impressive. When my uncle got a laptop a couple months ago he showed me mom and explained its specs and she said "so, what does that mean?" and he said "It's basically 16 of your computers. In one."

There is a local photographer who has a lens about as big as a 2 year old. It looks absurd when she actually uses it, because it so big. I can't find the picture of her with it, though.

I started on a VIC-20. I also remember my first desktop PC running Windows which had a 250MB harddrive. I added a second drive and had a whopping 0.75GB at one time.

You should get a more powerful PSU, I wouldn't go under 500 watts these days. Always go for quality on the PSU too, it's the most overlooked piece of hardware.

I hear Windows 7 is faster than Vista, so perhaps RAM upgrade is unnecessary. I am planning upgrade soon myself (my bro gets them for free from his school).

Vista and 7 are pretty much the same, except 7 is better optimized for UI responsiveness. They will both benefit from as much memory as you can give them.
