There's a ton of stuff going on in Uptown and immediately west of City Park. Every block has at least 1 project starting or finishing. It's pretty amazing and it feels like with most of low hanging fruit redeveloped in Lower Highland, Uptown has really picked up the pace.

I'll miss the Tavern Uptown but, I won't miss that parking lot.

It will be a shame to see that building go. The Grand (gay piano bar) used to be there before the Tavern Uptown.

Not to rehash the whole preservation discussion from a few pages back, but I really do hope that Southern Land Co creates a pedestrian friendly retail space at that corner. I will very much miss that structure and how it worked so well with the street, the trees, etc. I know we can't save every building, but i wouldve liked for this one to have stuck around or be integrated.

According to the rendering on their site, the new building looks to be 5 stories from 17th back for about a hundred feet I guess...and then the rest of it will be 8 stories.

I totally agree about that car wash lot. What a shame.

Since that stretch of 17th is a pretty active commercial corridor (despite many empty lots), I doubt that they won't put some sort of retail on that corner. Hopefully, the Tavern simply moves a block or two away or reopens in the new location.

reading through this...is it known with certitude that it's coming down? seems a good candidate for integration into the project. GREAT to see another parking lot go!

Wait a minute, didn't the building become historic when it went under contract with Southern? Isn't that how preservation works in Denver now? What's different about this building?

I wish there was a way to retain the original structure as part of the new development, similar to what's going on with the old Jazz bar on Welton or the new hotel across from the new King Soopers in the Union Station area.

No, buildings become historic when a new owner submits a development application, and the neighborhood takes notice that a high rise (defined as anything 35-feet or taller) is on its way.

Or is it on the date of filing of a lawsuit in District Court? One of those two...

Oh ok I'll just wait and see then. I'm sure someone somewhere will find out that a landowner <gasp> made money!!! And will figure out just exactly how much of his dreams and rights he or she wants to trample.

As an aside looking at the massing on the company's website makes the building look REALLY big. Honestly it will be hard to make it look good. I will not pretend I won't be a bit disappointed if they can't use the old building in the new development. But I'm smart enough to know it's not my right to dictate that after the fact.

or the Piggly Wiggly warehouse that Alliance Res built around across from Coors Field, actually Twenty One 01 on Market.

Too bad the almighty dollar so much more important than Denver's history. That's all.

Yeah it's too bad. It would be one thing if Denver was founded on money like mining gold or something. Since it was established as an altruistic commune with no plans to cultivate a tax base or grow until the last 5 years when developers stole this heritage from the city we will all have to just hang out heads and quietly weep at the ghastly turn of events.

I'll not apologize for my fondness of Denver's remaining old treasures.

I just figure if they respected this property's place in history and built on the rest of the site it would be awesome but I don't expect Southern Land Co. from Tennessee to give a rats ass.

It would be awesome! No disagreement there. And I wasn't directing that comment entirely at you.

For anyone who doesn't recall, this is how Alliance Res. built around (and over) the Piggy Wiggly building with TwentyOne 01 on Market.

I'd be happy to give them a height variance with setbacks to build around this "two story Italianate building" (HT to DownhomeDenver).

I will back you on preserving this building. Denver has thousands of old single family houses. But old commercial buildings are far less common.

Wow I'm surprised. Anyway, according to Denver property records that building was built in 1934.

1601 Pearl which I guess is called the Annabel Lee apartments was built in 1925.

Theres another nondescript two story structure right behind Uptown Tavern. So the only problem with saving the structure is what do you do with the the one story structure right next door to it? Is that worth saving too?

and it's in good shape, holding the corner so nicely...losing a dying relic is one thing, but this thing is solid. not saying that it is historic officially, but here you would *hope* that the developer designs with some sensitivity.

They're going to tear this down?? That's a real shame. I've been in there back in the mid 90s when it was the piano bar, but yeah, architecture like this should be preserved when possible. There are still empty lots on 17th, aren't there? Or at least there are buildings of no historical value.
