It's true, the disorder and decay due to drugs and homelessness have really hit most cities now, across North America. Yes of course some cities are worse, but the issue is more widespread now than ever, and places that used to laugh at the West Coast for having disorder are now dealing with it in their cities as well. I hope the recriminalization of public use will have some effect to at least make it less visible, I know that's no proper solution, but for cities to not crumble, getting it out of full public view is a start.

Great pics though, so much variety in the Kelowna cityscape (not in terms of buildings necessarily, just the combination of industrial/warehouse, to vineyard, to suburban, to hillside villas, to sagebrush coated hills, to small town historic brick, to modern office towers, condos, then the lake itself and the marina. So many layers really present there.

lol maybe if there was a way to walk in a straight line. It's over 700m on sidewalks, 600m if one is willing to cut around Orchard Plaza parking lots. 600m to the 97 bus stops in either direction.

WTF????

Now a four story commercial building?

The hotel was the PERFECT use and size for the site.

It's beyond frustrating when developers pull this kind of nonsense. Would have made that corner of downtown very cool since it already has the Eli rising rapidly basically next door.

Yeah, a beautiful design that matched the character of the location perfectly…. Nah, scrap it!

I’m with you, I hate insincere proposals brought to public attention.

Placeholders, piss off, only display what you are intending to build.

Especially since airbnbs are now banned, hotels are in extremely high demand especially downtown. Really infuriating that they would axe that development for a commercial development of this size without adding any new hotel space for tourists which this new development will surely rely on.

Not this simple. Staff spoke about it in the presentation to council. There was full intention by the owner to build 12 storeys. The neighbour needed to be on board because of building code implication affecting their building. The agreements fell through during the process so doing greater then 4 storeys isn't possible anymore.

Ahh, I see, thank you for the clarification. What a shame!

A lot of action at the UBCO site, with piling being done. Also, they cleared the school building. For the extra parkade, I am guessing?

Thanks for the updates everyone!

So downtown Kelowna will have 4 active tower projects going up at once then?

That's pretty good! Especially since that involves the city's two tallest towers.

Now if we could just ever get any new highway (interchange) and major transit projects moving in the area...

New Plans for 1930 Underhill

Not sure if this was mentioned anywhere in the thread previously, but the plans for 1930 Underhill that used to call for a 14 and 15 storey apartment building, has now been replaced with a scaled down 6-storey building. Previous plans called for 258 residential units, new plans have 177 units. Both plans have about 420 square meters (4500 square feet) of retail space on the main floor. Renderings of old and new below.

Previous plans:
