That exterior design looks a lot nicer than Edmonton's upcoming arena and definitely better than Quebec's new one. It looks more like a classy concert hall and not an arena.

Funny thing, the other day I was wondering why they can't make the ceilings in arenas a lot more pleasant to the eye - instead of these ugly steal beams showing. And now I see the design of Ottawa's ceiling and I'm loving it. Very elegant.

It's only a rough design and it's too early to say - but if that's an accurate representation of what it's going to look like (or close to it) - they're going to have the best looking arena in the league by a good margin.

This does look impressive. Love the surrounding amenities. The exterior is nice but I would give Rogers Place the edge here.

Where is the hockey? Funny they make such pretty renders but leave out the Sens to make you think it is just a grand hall and not a *cough* NHL arena.

I want to see what the score board will look like with that roof design, would it get a MSG treatment, or something innovative?

The arena looks like $$$$.

Looks on par with Barclays from a materials stand point. Likely a $750 million build for the arena.

It looks cool. But who will pay for it?

Nobody is surprised when Quebec dumps a bunch of public money down the toilet. At least they did not hide the intentions, they tossed money at the Arena and were upfront about it. No bogus claims of "economic development" or "jobs" was peddled in Quebec. It was honest waste with obvious attempts to lure a NHL team back, for that reason alone you have to give them folks in QC some credit. I respect that more 100% then the bait and switch in Edmonton.

Yeah, I mean it's nice as hell don't get me wrong but I'm not sure why anyone would say it's nicer than Rogers. What's so impressive about it? Quebec's arena would be right up there with rogers if they went with a more brushed aluminium finish to the exterior cladding. They messed up bad with the white. I'm from Edmonton so I might sound biased but keep in mind my favourite look of an arena is the MTS centre followed up by the bell centre. The glass look to me is "blah" but they would be the first one in Canada to do it so it might not be the worst decision...The thing I like about MTS is it's a nice mix between old style brick and modern glass. I think it will still look good in 35 years. same with the bell centre after they fit some more glass up front.

Fantastic proposal for Ottawa, do it, do it now. The 'Lats' very much need it.

Do you think the trans canada highway is wide enough to transport the CTC to Calgary when Ottawa is done with it?

In all Honesty though what happens to this building when a new one is built? It has to be somehow utilized in ottawa. Or does it? Are sens fans going to be attached to this building the same way fans in Edmonton are attached to rexall? it barley has any real history...(in comparison). Ottawa is way to small for 3 major arenas. It will have to be re purposed perhaps the same fate as rexall? hockey training facility? 6 indoor sheets of ice on 2 floors?

These are the renders I found on their site. In the PDF presentation, they have one that is much more specific to the Sens. It seems that the exterior would be able to be lit up representing different functions. Game Night, emblazoned with Sens colours and what not, for Disney on Ice, something else suitable I guess.

They probably don't want to play up the local aspect of the Senators too much with the NCC, though, as it's notoriously obsessed with making a capital for "all Canadians". Mostly this involves sitting on large swaths of grass for decades while they try to figure out what the hell that actually entails.

My understanding is that the development group would pay for it. As far as I know, the Gov't of Canada isn't ponying up any money for this. Some of the more specialized portions of the site (new central library for the city, new Library and Archives building etc.) might qualify though.

As for what the Sens plan to do with the CTC, I don't think they've made their intentions known. I don't think the city really has any particular fondness for the building and wouldn't be surprised if the Sens were to demolish it and redevelop the site.

At first glance the Lebreton rink looks spectacular, but these super-airy, translucent looking renderings have a way of being a disappointment in the end.

So this is strictly a private development, right? I take it the local government in Ottawa isn't ponying up to replace a 20 year old arena?

I would fully expect the CTC to be demolished once the new venue is built; like Oilkountry said, not a chance that Ottawa can maintain three large arenas (not to mention the one in Gatineau).

Oiler Entertainment Group has successfully transitioned season-ticket holders to Rogers Place

BY TERRY JONES, EDMONTON SUN

Despite the plummeting price of oil and the still cellar-dwelling position of the Edmonton Oilers in the NHL Western Conference standings, season ticket holders have done just that. They’ve selected their seats. It’s been an almost total triumph.

The monumental job of transferring season ticket holders from one arena to another has been completed and Stew MacDonald and his Oilers Entertainment Group staff appear to have succeeded beyond belief, relocating more than 14,000 season ticket holders into new seats in the new building.

Almost - theoretically, the NCC could reject both arena/development proposals and restart the development bidding process. That seems unlikely, but stranger things have happened when the NCC is involved.

Vast improvement in location for Ottawa. But still, the LeBreton location is a km away from the DT area. How important is Confederation ParK? That would put the arena smack dab in the middle of everything.

I presume that wouldn't happen though.

There doesn't look to be many sites available where the arena would be close to all the action, like it is in other Canadian cities.

I doubt the NCC would give up Confederation Park. It is a major site for Winterlude, among other things.

I can't think of a more inappropriate spot for an arena than Confederation Park, even ignoring the park's own merits. I suppose the lawn on Parliament Hill would be worse.

This is hardly an issue as it'll be connected to the new subway and easily within walking distance to Downtown. It's not difficult walking around that area at all. Vastly superior than the half hour drive to Kanata.
