It's not so much a glamourization of it, necessarily. The portrayal in popular culture certainly makes it more appealing, but there are a lot of kids out there who pretend to be in gangs but aren't actually and they turn out fine, and then there are kids who never show much interest in that kind of lifestyle, but end up in gangs because their families fell apart and they had no where else to go or no one else to lean on. In Thunder Bay these days with home takeovers (a phenomenon where gangs hijack a low income family's home by providing for them in exchange for sheltering gang members) some kids literally have no choice to escape it; it just moves into their house.
And I say this from the perspective of someone who volunteers with youth and sees some of the worst of it. My neighbourhood is pretty lucky because there isn't any large scale low income housing, it's all single family homes rented out, often with an owner living nearby and keeping an eye on things. In the suburban developments it's a different story; within weeks, those gangs can colonize an entire rowhouse block by breaking down the firebreaks in their attics and basements, making enforcement difficult and standoffs long and intense.
Fortunately for us, the government has given us exactly fuck all in police funding to deal with it.

Be thankful for that.
