The Rockies are about half the height of the Himalayas... more than just bumps.

To use your own analogy, lets pick a random NA city, on an island perhaps, with its tallest towers being around 200 metres high. To you, other nearby towers, around 100 metres high, would be just mere bumps?

What Montreal lacks in height, it sure makes up in variety and textures.
Oh lord. I stopped coming to ths forum for awhile but upon returning I've noticed the Montreal forumers are really into circle jerking their own city. Everyone else (most people) see the 4th best skyline in Canada but you'd think to God it was the Picasso of skylines if you read this post.

What I personally see is an underwhelming body of water, couple dilapidated bridges, a stubby table top skyline which lacks an sort of dynamic and yes also an underwhelming "mountain" hill. Don't get me wrong it is a nice skyline but you guys gotta stop with the over compensation, we get it, there's a couple churches.

That middle shot really shows why Toronto is destroying every other city in the country skyscraper-wise. Amazing pic and one of the best skyline shots i've ever seen of any city

From where was that middle pic taken? (I have a feeling I'm going to say "Doh!" when I see the reply).

Well, we've seen how posts like that tend to generate productive and educational exchanges. And always in the most respectful tone.

I have no dog in the fight, but I'm still digesting the idea of the St Lawrence as an "unimpressive body of water" (sic).

Perhaps you could conserve brain cells by comparing apples to apples, oranges to oranges. Mountains in the middle of cities, mountains nowhere near cities.

And while you're at it, attempt to understand the not so subtle nuance between the two.

Any average Joe would surely recognize the difference.
A wee bit sensitive, are you not?

Well I'll apologize for hurting your feelings with respect to possibly the greatest mountain ever within the downtown of a city. I should have really shown better restraint in speaking of my amusement of it being called a mountain and refrained from comparing it to mere bumps.

Of course, me being from Calgary no doubt compounded the problem as I am just a cheap-beer swilling, out of work oil patch dumb ass driving a lifted coal rolling diesel 4x4 who has absolutely no capability of competing on an intellectual level with the likes of you.

You, sir, are correct and I am just stupid, sorry for just being on the same planet as you. I could go on apologizing but my pea sized brain is incapable of generating any more words that would add value to my apology and I should just go back to dragging my hairy knuckles on the ground because that is one thing that I believe I might genuinely be able to pull off in such a manner so as to get a very subtle nod of approval from the critical eyes and discerning mind of one such as yourself.

You are the best!

I'm not sure exactly why you feel so insulted or threatened by my little and quite innocent burst of praise toward my own city, of which I am more often than not critical, even though I do post a lot of pics because that's what I like to do. I almost never write overly boosterism about Montreal. I know that our skyline pale in comparison to Toronto or Vancouver or Calgary, but should I just feel miserable about it or rather feel good about its own merits, insignificant as they may be ? At least I don't feel the need to sh*t on other cities or other member posts to feel good or secure about my city. Anyway, cheers !

Sadly I can't find pictures of the real mountain of Canada: the Niagara Escarpment.

Nothing in that post was starting shit or being an asshole. Except you.

This entire thread makes me sick. You'd think people could show a little restraint of self-awareness when firestorms erupt over this pedantic bullshit.

When someone attacks your city or you personally over something like a fucking skyline, you have the moral high ground. You have a perfect opportunity to take the high road and make the other person look like a shallow fool, but that hasn't happened once in these last few pages. Everyone's so insecure about what the fucking buildings look like that they go out of their way to come into this thread, which is supposed to be for nice photos of cities, attacking others for no goddamn reason.

Mods need to freeze this thread for a few days and let everyone calm down. This has gone on for days. This isn't going to resolve itself.

That first paragraph I can understand but the second one is just not necessary. I could say bad things about every major canadian city of which skyline pics are posted here but pratically never do.

We get it, Montreal is underwhelming to you. Next time, you can keep your opinion to yourself and move on when you see people praising their city (I believe this is the first time on this forum this happens ), which is natural when on a forum with skyscraper enthusiasts. I think a lot of people would appreciate that.

Yupp it has.

I get that people are proud of their cities no different than I like the view of Calgary's downtown skyline with the Rockies and foothills as a backdrop. The view from Crescent Road To the north is quite something and will most likely remain so in perpetuity because of Calgary's shadow rules with respect to the Bow River.

But Calgary is going to see a very slow period for probably 10 years of not more with respect to new skyscrapers being built after the current crop is finished. Calgary will never match Toronto in terms of height, density or expanse of it's skyscraper base and Vancouver, well that coastal range combined with the water will always make for more breath taking shots. Montreal, give it a bit more time and it'll be more of a superstar with respect to skyscrapers - historical decisions have dealt Montreal a few bad hands but that's not to say that much greater upward growth is not in that city's future. Edmonton - same thing and they'll soon have western Canada's tallest - kudos to them.

Hell, maybe I'll try to get a few different pictures - I've kept my Canon SLR in my truck just for that reason, now I just need to get my ass down to some more unique vantage points than the usual stuff.

It's more a case of what's in a name. You believe it shouldn't be called Mont Royal because it's doesn't qualify as a mountain. Others say who cares. That's the name and no one is being misled into believing it's a fucking mountain.

Let's call it the way it is. Both are unnecessary. There's no school when it comes to skyline aesthetics . It's entirely one's opinion.
