The demolition of the old Paramount on Main Street is apparently starting next week.

It will be very interesting to see what Ashford intends to replace this with.

I remember reading that Ashford wouldn't be demolishing the building until they were ready to build something to replace it. They didn't want to leave a "hole" on Main Street.

This is from a CBC interview conducted after Ashford purchased the property: "I see opportunity," said Jim Dixon, a principal with Ashford and its chief financial officer. He described a vision of more retail, restaurants, office space and residential units on top. He also said that addressing downtown parking will be a priority.

It looks like we will soon see two Ashford projects downtown, this one and the vacant lot at Highfield & Gordon.

But until then, this new open space will be an "opportunity" to cash in on VIP Parking spaces for the Farmer's Market at $5 per space / per 30 minutes. Bahahahahaha

The Main St facade is staying put as they are currently looking at tenants. It's only the back of the building, facing Westmorland, that is being demolished.

I'm beginning to worry that the economy is going to take a really profound hit from COVID-19, and this will throw a large bucket of cold water on new construction projects that have not already broken ground.

In particular, this has the potential to really affect new retail, hospitality and hotel projects.

Fencing is up along westmorland now around the site.

A lot of statistics have come out over the last few months showing Moncton's low vacancy rates. Hopefully they can find the tenants so they can proceed this year with a project here. They also have the property that used to be the Business Development Canada offices. There is a for lease sign on that building.

Applewood's Smoked BBQ is apparently out of business.

This is hardly a surprise to me. Every time I went by there, I would look in the window to see if anything was going on, and it always seemed dead.

Ground floor commercial, but I wonder if the upper floors are apartments or office space?

That's too bad, I actually liked their food & the owner & servers were incredibly nice. There wasn't much of an ambiance though.

They likely would not have gotten past the next 2 months regardless

When Ashford Properties announced that they were starting demolition of the old Paramount Theater, they said they envisioned a building fronting on Westmorland Street. It will be interesting to see what they do about parking. When they originally made their downtown purchase, they said addressing the parking issue would be a priority. Jim Dixon also said that he envisioned mixed use projects similar to 55 Queen, with ground floor retail/commercial and residential units above.

I personally envision a parking garage. Even before Ashford bought this property, after the last business located there went out of business, I thought it would be an excellent place for a parking garage. If you made it 5-6 storeys, that would probably be big enough that you could build the new road behind assumption place without removing to many parking spots.

Not all construction sites are shut down. I noticed work continues at the apartment on St-George/Weldon and also at the new apartment behind Pomadori Pizzeria on St George blvd.

Maybe Ashford just voluntarily stopped the demolition job. The Tannery place site and the Hyatt Hotel site are still active too. So at least like the virus hasn't stopped those projects.
