Nice shot up Sackville with the afternoon sun gleaming through the Nova Centre. This will be a really cool view when all is completed.

Thanks for all the pictures Jonovision.

The large balconies will result in quite a bit of concrete being visible once this is complete. Maybe if the balcony safety rails are glass then the effect will be mitigated.

This is a rendering previously posted by Dmajackson from the Chronicle Herald. Hopefully this building will look ok when complete.

The rendering looks good but it's hard to say what some of the materials are. Are the balconies meant to be some kind of partially-frosted glass?

The lobby level seems to be turning out pretty nicely so far. One of the big deficiencies of new downtown buildings of a few years ago is that their lower floors were too low-slung. None of the new buildings seem to suffer from this. They also have features like awnings to keep pedestrians out of the rain and snow, something that is pretty useful in Halifax's climate. Streets like Barrington used to have a lot more sheltered areas. Unfortunately, they've been stripped away over time and the street has ended up more exposed and less comfortable as a result.

The last time I saw that perspective was in a rendering for the Twisted Sisters. Imagine if they were there across the street from this.

It's still not there yet but recently I've thought that this stretch around Sackville and Barrington is one of the parts of downtown that might, for lack of a less cheesy description, introduce the city to a new level of urbanity. If it turns out well it will be heavily built up but also attractive, with lots of pedestrian traffic and major storefront businesses that wouldn't be viable without the density of these highrise buildings. Maybe people will see that and get past their anti-height and anti-city mentality. I would say anti-modern-architecture sentiment is already on its way out (up until recently Halifax didn't have any good modern buildings, and a lot of people equated modern development proposals to the Maritime Centre or Scotia Square).

I've also thought that the region, all of Atlantic Canada really, has missed out by not having a place that offers vibrancy and the amenities you get even in mid-sized cities in most parts of the continent. Such a place would be interesting to visitors too if it retained some unique local and regional character.

Yeah if Twisted Sisters had been built, and if/once the Discovery Centre rebuild happens, that would have been a very impressive view.

What's going in the old Discovery Centre building?

Wow that side of Barrington will look good when The Roy and Discovery Centre buildings are done. Beginning to show signs of life.

I didn't get a shot of it but they have started putting up the brick on the lower level and appear to be testing different glasses for the balconies.

Also starting to make a dent in the skyline.
