It's still not there yet but recently I've thought that this stretch around Sackville and Barrington is one of the parts of downtown that might, for lack of a less cheesy description, introduce the city to a new level of urbanity. If it turns out well it will be heavily built up but also attractive, with lots of pedestrian traffic and major storefront businesses that wouldn't be viable without the density of these highrise buildings. Maybe people will see that and get past their anti-height and anti-city mentality. I would say anti-modern-architecture sentiment is already on its way out (up until recently Halifax didn't have any good modern buildings, and a lot of people equated modern development proposals to the Maritime Centre or Scotia Square).
I've also thought that the region, all of Atlantic Canada really, has missed out by not having a place that offers vibrancy and the amenities you get even in mid-sized cities in most parts of the continent. Such a place would be interesting to visitors too if it retained some unique local and regional character.
