Same strategy as Walmart used to break into the Canadian market. About 15 years ago, almost every Walmart in the city was in a mall (old Woolco stores); now, St. Vital is the only one still in a mall, and it's been expanded a few times...

Interesting. When Zellers was up for sale, lots of the talk around the value was in terms of the property/leases they controlled. Would be interesting if Target abandoned those sites considering that's where most of the value seemed to be.

What's to become of the remaining Zellers stores? Stay branded as Zellers?

I wouldn't mind seeing Targets in Canada taking over all the Zellers stores.

Sorry folks, I'm an old Minnesotan, I've gotten used to Target. Also, every Zellers I've been into in TO is a complete DUMP. Not to mention they're pretty small as well.

I was never fond of Zellers, even as a kid going up to Winnipeg. I always thought K-Marts in the US were in better shape.

articles i have read said Kohls, Marshalls and JC Penny may pick up the sites that Target doesn't want - all three are looking into Canadian Expansion well marshalls has already started as well as Wal-mart has apparently expressed interest in taking locations as they have an agressive expansion plan too now in Canada - smaller stores and more grocery oriented stores

But i wonder too - this target thing - they aren't buying the chain from HBC they are just buying the leases of the stores and they will be able to sub-lease them out? - so the chain could still exist i guess?

You may very well have wept if you had the misfortune of stepping into a Canadian k-mart. Coincidentally, they were bought out by Zellers about 15 years ago.

The US K-Marts aren't exactly that great. Most of them are much like Zellers in Canada (or worse).

Go to the one in Grand Forks and you will see what I mean.

The ones in Fargo-Moorhead are pretty bad as well.

I was once told by someone who used to work at the K-Mart in Moorhead that the only thing keeping that store fiscally afloat was the fact that ND has that stupid pharmacy law, and people from Fargo could take advantage of the pharmacy at the Moorhead K-Mart.

I'm surprised K-Mart in general hasn't gone the way of Circuit City and Linens-n-Things.

Does anyone know if the Bed Bath and Beyond is going ahead in Kenaston Common, and when it might open?

I would like to see the downtown Zellers become a Target, eventually.

Quebec retailers keen on city

Simons at head of pack seeking Winnipeg foothold
By: Murray McNeill

A Quebec City-based retailer that had its sights set on anchoring an ill-fated redevelopment project at the Canad Inns Stadium site could still be on the leading edge of a potential invasion of new stores from Quebec.

The head of La Maison Simons chain of fashion mega-stores said the family-owned firm is keen on opening an 80,000-to-100,000-square-foot store in Winnipeg, even though it wasn’t able to strike a deal to become an anchor tenant in The Elms upscale retail development that had been planned for the stadium site at Polo Park.

"I’m available. My dance card is open, and I’m looking for a suitor," Peter Simons said in an interview, adding he particularly likes the Polo Park area. He’s just waiting to see what redevelopment proposal the city approves for the stadium site.

And Simons isn’t the only Quebec retailer with an eye on the Winnipeg market.
The president and CEO of the province’s francophone trade agency — Agence nationale et internationale du Manitoba (ANIM) — said there are at least a half a dozen others interested in setting up shop here.

Mariette Mulaire said they include another clothing retailer — Tristan & America — some restaurant chains, hotel chains, specialty-food stores and a spa.
Many of them were unearthed during Creswin Properties Inc.’s search for Canadian and U.S. tenants for The Elms.

When is the downtown retail strategy going to yield visible results? Some of the retailers mentioned should be wooed downtown.

Has T&T supermarket pulled out of the Polo Park/old arena location? I heard some whispering rumblings in an alley downtown.

T&T out, Sobeys in?

Hugs!

Yeah, I found some confirmation in a Winnipeg Free Press Story that the T&T deal had fallen through -- no reason given.

A Sobeys would be nice... is that rumour or fact?

My sister is a manager at Polo Park and she indicated that H&M was going to take the McNally space. Apparently, when they saw the numbers that Forever 21 posted, they changed their minds. Coach has also signed and she was saying that they are looking for another space at the new "Seasons of Tuxedo" mall which has signed a few new retailers. I won't tell you that she manages a prominent store at Polo which has other subsidiaries that aren't yet in Winnipeg. LOL

^ it's honestly not surprising that some of these trendy retailers might not do well in Winnipeg. They take SO long to actually set up shop here, and in that time most Winnipeggers have filled their need in Grand Forks, Fargo and Minni. And by the time they do come, we've already moved on the next fad...

H&M is also really late to the game.

I think what he's saying is that H&M will be taking over the old McNally space because of how well Forever 21 is doing. Is that correct Jammon?

No, he stated that they changed their minds. I don't think that Forever21 is doing all that bad as that place is always busy when I pass buy it, but perhaps H&M are looking for the BUSIEST shopping area in the city, and that will no doubt be Seasons of Tuxedo once it gets going.
