NYCLife... have you ever really lived in New York? Honestly, when I move back myself, I will not want to move anywhere else. New York has a feel that Atlanta, or any other city, simply can not replicate. Many people are happy living where they are in Chicago, LA, San Fran, and NYC! Simply put, some people just don't want to move to Atlanta... and the fact that condos are so cheap is not going to entice them any further. Not to mention, who tells you they'll move into a condo in the first place. Many transplants from other cities end up moving to the suburbs of Atlanta!

Not to mention, the traffic in Atlanta is much worse... the only difference, Atlanta just doesn't have the massive gridlock that NYC does during rush hours.

oh, ok. wow, i wanna play!

how about we just call the heads of coca cola, home depot, turner broadcasting and delta airlines and ask them to buy all the empty condo's? yeah, it would be great, they could use condo's as part of their employee recognition programs. gee, every time an employee marks another year of employment, their employer would simply reward them with a brand spanking new condo in downtown, midtown or buckhead.

just think of it, these lucky employees also get a $100 gift card from home depot so they could put a propane BBQ grill, potted plants and patio furniture on their balcony just to make sure the outside world knows that particular condo is occupied. as an added bonus, coca cola would deliver free soda's and vitamin water to each condo so that come high-noon each sunday, every resident would stand on their brand new condo balcony, surrounded buy their brand new home depot patio decor and sing 'i'd like to buy the world a coke' while they cleverly wink at their neighbor on the patio next door and just like that a chorus wave across atlanta, across the country and maybe across the atlantic ocean, people in NYC, SF, DC and maybe even london hear how wonderful things are in atlanta and sigh, 'gee, if i could only be sooo lucky to work for a wonderful company in atlanta that gives away free condos'.

gosh, in one fell swoop, we would have solved almost all of atlanta's problems, reduced traffic, since everyone would live oh so close to work, super high employee satisfaction that would propel Coke, HD, Turner and Delta to take over all their competition and move those newly acquired employees to atlanta. then we could get on with building more super beautiful shiny condo towers so atlanta has the best effing postcards and calanders in the whole wide world!

gosh, it's almost a vicious circle, this being so very optimistic and all. where does it end, really?

by the way, where's the space shuttle? i'm ready to check out the international space station.

dubia? really? in the same breath as rome?

I was in Manhattan recently. It was amazing, Ive never been anywhere that urbanized and cool. The Village really pales midtown by comparison. I was also in LA recently and I can tell you that Atlanta has no traffic problems at all relative to Los Angeles. Rush hour sucks but the rest of the time you can get anywhere pretty fast. There was gridlocked traffic during weekday work hours all over LA.

Re: excess Buckhead office space: I think businesses are likely to migrate to places like Atlanta at a higher rate in the near future. Couple the cost of doing business in traditional market centers with the municipal service problems stemming from budget shortfalls in these old centers and you have a strong reason to move to cheap, well funded Atlanta.

Wait, you say the traffic's worse HERE, but there's also worse gridlock there - so i mean, it sounds like the traffics worse in NY. Ive def. heard that, which is one reason everyone walks.

But of course many move to apartments, suburbs, etc. And OF COURSE NY's got a feel unlike any other city - ive been there 3 times, & it's where my heart lies. That said, you gotta be kidding if you think people in cities like that (noisy, crowded, BAD traffic, HIGH taxes, HIGH cost of living, & smaller/older apartments) wouldnt want to move to smaller, more "doable" cities like ATL.

Atlanta's got more trees, more friendliness, more sunlight, more suburbs, less traffic, BEAUTIFUL homes & is cheap as sh-t compared to NY. You couldnt live in a bathroom for 300K in Manhattan. Point is PLENTY of people want to get away from big cities (same reason people move up to the suburbs here).

Hell, even Donald Trump is considering leaving NY b/c of the super high taxes.

Uh huh. So i guess you'd prefer Atlanta to stay the SAME, build nothing for the next 10 years, no new nightclubs or restaurants to attract people, no new shopping, nothing new for our skylines, so people get the impression that ATL isnt going anywhere. So they dont locate their businesses here, so we stagnate basically & remain in the minds of millions of people as the city of the "OLD SOUTH" with rednecks, racists, & backwoods closed minded republicans - which means movies CONTINUE NOT to film here, adding to our image as "Atlanta, the TOWN of Coca cola, RAP music, & pathetic southern charm"

Ohhhhh yea, it would be a TERRIBLE thing to invite people & businesses with MONEY down here, i mean dare we acually try to catch up to the top 5 coolest big cities in the nation?????

And how horrific it would be for Atlanta calendars & postcards to have anything newer than 1997! How horrible it would be for people to have a NEW perspective on our NEW skylines instead of the wonderful dusty, vintage "ghetto view" trash that you seem to be so in love with.

"Shield your eyes tourists! You're gonna be shown a picture with a building in it that was built after 1992!"

Oh, & yes i said "Dubai & Rome" in the same sentence. Why shouldnt i? It wasnt the Greeks or the Romans that built 3 mile wide islands the shape of palm trees with hundreds of miles of added coastline that can be seen from space. Nor did they build the first underwater hotel. Or design a thousand foot tower with 70 rotating floors. Or build over 400 buildings over 20 stories in under a decade, making it the fastest growing city in world history. Rome's not the only development marvel man.

Oh, & you're jumping on me for having an OPINION on what Atlanta could/should do to get development going.

WHat's up with that? Only think i can think of is you dont like that i maybe insulted some people (maybe you) for daring to want BETTER postcard & calendar shots of Atlanta --- which is COMPLETELY TRUE, the current ones SUCK, period.

I dont see what's wrong with that, other than you dont like me criticizing current ATL pro photography norms???

A lot of cities would kill to have our prominence on the hip hop scene. Why not build on what we've got?

hey, i can show you hundreds of cities across the U.S. that are stagnant. atlanta, on the other hand, has plenty of vitality and is constantly progressing.

atlanta, city proper, is far from stagnant or dull.

atlanta's suburbs? well that's another story.

Well good point, but i just find it annoying that the only way we can ge movies filmed here (that are actually set IN the city) is if its a hip hop/drummer/dance film. Of course the main reason is b/c we're in the south & we all know what Hollywood thinks of the south.

Thats def. the image id like to add to Atlanta - i mean imagine if instead of big movies taking place in Seattle (adding to ITS image) they were filmed here, adding to OUR image?

I moved from Atlanta to NYC in 1999 and I can't imagine moving back. I still have a great love for Atlanta, but it feels so provincial and somehow still soulless whenever I visit. Prices in Manhattan are coming down and a friend of mine bought a very cute 1 BR on the Upper West Side (119th and Broadway) for 250,000 so there are deals out there if you're willing to stick it out.

SHOOT, 250K for a 1br upper west side? Damn, that's hot.

Let me ask you then, doesnt it feels safer in manhattan generally than Atlanta overall? I mean the first time i went was 2001 & remember walking thru Battery Park at midnight - and felt VERY safe - as opposed to ATL, generally speaking.

I mean you cant do a drive by shooting in manhattan, too many witnisses & traffic. It's hard to get raped, mugged or shot in a place so crowded. So, i'd imagine the crime's practically a void subject there?

You have a very strange view of crime in big cities.

While New York is probably the best model of fighting big-city crime in the country (after a storied history ended in the late-1990s), it still has plenty of problems. Population density and crime are exceptionally well-correlated, as you might imagine if you thought about it for a while.

Is that basically because more people equals more crime? Or are there other factors related to density? (I'm not challenging you, just asking).
