If you are fortunate enough to make the same wage or something very close in Winnipeg as you would in Calgary or Vancouver, sure, you will be further ahead. If housing in Calgary is 50% higher than Winnipeg and a family spends 30% of their incomes on housing, then as a rough calculation, your family income needs to be 15% higher. For one person, might be a stretch but for dual incomes, maybe not so much.

This is where the argument becomes more specific. If we are talking typical far flung cookie cutter suburbs, then this argument is probably pretty close. The average house prices in those types of areas are in the order of 50% more in Calgary.

If we are talking inner city areas such as Wolesley, then the argument becomes much more skewed. My sister who lives in the Marda Loop area of Calgary laments the 600k plus prices for the typical 1000 sq.ft. housing stock around her area. In these comparisons, there is no comparison. The fact of the matter is that I can not own something similar to my current house in Wolesley under similar circumstances in Calgary.

In other news, the entire city of Winnipeg has emptied out as citizens were just made aware that living in Winnipeg makes absolutely no financial sense, and have since moved to Calgary, where all jobs pay more, and the sidewalks are paved in gold brick.

Council passes capital budget

City council passed the 2009 capital budget this afternoon but it did so to the disappointment of community activists who had earlier pleaded with councillors and Mayor Sam Katz to increase funding for bike paths and pedestrian walkways.

Council voted 11- 4 to approve the $476.1-million public works plan.

Councillors Jenny Gerbasi, Harvey Smith, Lillian Thomas and Dan Vandal turned down the budget.

The afternoon was also marked by repeated tributes to former River Heights- Fort Garry Coun. Brenda Leipsic, who passed away last week from lung cancer.

About 75 activists filled a city hall gallery and a handful addressed councillors, repeating calls they had made before municipal committees in recent weeks for more money to go towards so-called active transportation.

The budget earmarked $4.2 million for active transportation Councillors rejected a last-minute motion to increase such spending by $2 million.

I don't want to keep beating a dead horse but, enough already with Lillian Thomas voting against everything. Is she a fucking cyborg spitting out "no's". It is embarrassing already. She doesn't even need to attend any council meetings - just pencil her in for a no vote.

My buddy and his gf, who have lived in Cowtown for most of their lives, are planning to move to Regina within two years; Calgary is driving them nutzoid!

Original Winnie the Pooh drawings fetch $2.3M at auction

Shepard is also highly coveted by collectors.
A series of original illustrations by the British Shepard, and other Pooh paraphernalia, sold for nearly $2.3 million Cdn at auction in London, England, on Wednesday.
One of his most iconic Pooh images — titled He went on tracking, and Piglet...ran after him — fetched about $206,000. Sotheby's officials had given the work a pre-sale estimate of between $72,00-$108,000.
The sale also represented a new record high for the sale of a drawing by Shepard, who also created the illustrations for Kenneth Grahame's The Wind in the Willows. The illustrator died in 1976.
Another familiar image entitled Bump, bump, bump — going up the stairs, which depicts Christopher Robin ascending a staircase dragging along his beloved bear by a leg, sold for $176,000, also surpassing pre-sale estimates.
The hammer also fell on lots that included limited edition Pooh books and tomes signed by author AA Milne.
The sale demonstrated the public's affection for the drawings, said a "thrilled" Philip Errington, Sotheby's specialist in children's books and original illustrations.
"The interest from around the world in these superb drawings, and the highly competitive bidding from many buyers, has demonstrated the worldwide appeal of Winnie the Pooh," he added, according to Agence France-Presse.
In November 2000, the Pavilion Gallery Museum in Winnipeg — with support from several levels of government as well as private individuals — bought Shepard's only known oil painting of Pooh at a London auction for $274,000.

I was in Winnipeg 18 months ago. I had a hotel downtown and was impressed how clean and cosmopolitan it was.

I care, and because I felt like it.

Well, even though most of us can be critical and frustrated with certain elements of Winnipeg (same can be said for all places), some things go too far.

My personal experience has been that home grown Albertans are generally not much different than the rest of us when it comes to attitudes towards other places. What I have seen is that its generally a smaller group of these transplanted nutjobs who have come to Alberta from other places (many for socio-political reasons) who revel in the opportunity to take shots at the places they came from or any other places across the country.
