It’s similar to the removal of the Embarcadero Freeway and its feeders in San Francisco that greatly beautified and changed our northeastern waterfront and helped stimulate an entirely new South Financial District. You will be well pleased with the long term results!

That was a great thing that happened for San Francisco. We can only hope that something like that can happen in Seattle. Seattle might have some limitations with the area being fill. Not sure if that was the case for SF.

Yeah, I'm sure the values of the commercial buildings that were adjacent to the viaduct are now soaring!

We just did that with Highway 99 -- a nearly two-mile section went to a bypass tunnel this year. I-5 is covered for maybe four blocks in an important spot, but it's a tough proposition to cover much more of it, though it's being studied.

That's nice but I would rather see new tunnels bored. This seems like it would be better for the city, some ramps might be removed but there are mitigation efforts to deal with that, and the obvious elephant in the room is cost. This gives the opportunity for more lanes to be added relieving some of the congestion.

Again, the costs, likely north of 10 billion, would be a huge barrier. More pressing projects are needed and funded. 2030s could be a good decade to initiate a project like this. Start the planning now. Hopefully by time construction is on the horizon, congress properly funds the highway trust fund.

Big issue is new from scratch bypasses built would likely exceed costs for a bored tunnel for I-5. I think completely building a new tunnel will allow for better connectivity than a cap.

Two alternate definitions of greater Downtown had the following populations:

4.757 square miles: 131,507
2.713 square miles: 84,971

How has the Seattle thread been dead for a year? Isn't Civic Square (a 600+ footer) now U/C?

Is there a thread for that one? There are a lot of other ~500 footers flying under the radar it seems in Seattle.

Somehow no one from Seattle seems to be on this site. I would love to see project updates and photos if anyone is around and has been thinking about posting them!

And if anyone knows a good non-paywalled site to pay attention to Seattle development updates, I would love to know! I've been struggling to find a sufficient source.

The Seattle project updates moved to SSC. This happened long ago when SSP moved Seattle into the format currently inflicting Portland, where you had to click on subcategory menu pages vs. having a single city page.

Civic Square started then stopped, related to the huge construction price fluctuations in the region, which are among the worst anywhere.

We're building several towers just under the 484' limit in certain Downtown fringes. One was a restart of a paused project from two years ago, the 1,130-unit, two-tower Seattle House at 2300 6th. We're also finishing up some under the old 440' limit.

Bellevue is building the tallest projects in the region, two 600' office towers. One is owned by Amazon and the other is leased to Amazon. They recently announced that interior buildouts will lag to figure out the new work style situation.

Good video. You can skip some of the first couple minutes that basically show the same angle. Thankfully I'm a sucker for this type of music.

Hello, I just returned from a trip to Seattle. Just did some touristy things, visited the sights of the beautiful city, and I noticed a LOT of construction activity right in between Pikes Place and the Seattle Aquarium and I was wondering if anybody knows what is being built. Thanks!

Apparently there's now a 150m+ building U/C at 616 Battery Street according to SSC.

Not sure if there's a thread here though.
