That Kentucky bucket tower is almost completely hidden from view.

Funny you say that: I've been wondering if the ultimate plan is to tear it down. It's getting to a point where there's no view to be had. I'm being hyperbolic, of course, but if things continue as such, it really won't be long. Is there any plan to protect the views? Any Calgarians care to weigh in?

Still great views from the Kentucky bucket tower - just viewing within the towers rather than miles above like it was when she was built. There is nothing really tall enough (yet) SW of the tower to block the view to the Rockies.

Wow, I didn't realize that the new arena in Calgary looks practically finished from the outside. I thought that was a render at first.

Calgary has got a great skyline...but that Kentucky bucket tower looks cheap/crap. Sorry, but I have never liked it. Perhaps it is the banal concrete trunk. Perhaps it is the KFC bucket likeness

You might be thinking of the BMO Centre.

It’s still pretty cool when they light the torch on top during the Olympics though.

One of the great Clockzilla battles. Complete with a Lio-ism (Dwight).

I like the Space Needle or whatever its called. Beyond that, most of the observation towers don't look great, IMHO. The contrast they add to skyline more than makes up for their appearance. It would be unfortunate to see the Calgary Tower removed.

20 years is a long time. The next ten could be something else.

If Calgary loses the tower it would be nice to see an observation deck in one of the taller buildings. The view from the tower to the mountains was always a nice time when I visited Calgary. Maybe we could move the tower to here. It would be the tallest thing here for many decades, perhaps centuries.

I think Tokyo with Tokyo Tower and Skytree have decent observation towers. The CN Tower is still decent as well. The Space Needle is definitely an icon of design.

The Space Needle is an icon like something pulled from The Jetsons cartoon. And the CN Tower is definitely a Canadian point of pride. I mean look at the views harls got on a crappy winter's day.

I'd be for Calgary tearing the tower down if they reuse the same site to build one taller. It's positioned damn near perfectly in the heart of the city. The current one has a roof height of 171 m (561 ft). What if they built one 2.5x-3x the height?

I'd definitely be on board with a suitable replacement for the Kentucky Bucket tower.

They actually engineered it so that the Calgary tower could be extended in the future. Not sure how feasible it would be. There hasn't seemed to be a business case for it. If the Stampede Station twin Marriotts end up being built with an observation deck as proposed, the tower will definitely lose business. Not sure how much the restaurant is paying the bills vs the observation deck right now?

I like the Calgary Tower. But I'm a sucker for old Soviet-era observation towers.

Oh I agree it’s ugly - but it is lovable as a native Calgarian.
In addition, it’s a great reference point when comparing skyline shots from different eras, like a scaled reference.
