Oracle Corp., the world’s second-largest software company, plans to build a new corporate campus on 27 acres overlooking Lady Bird Lake, just east of downtown Austin, the company confirmed to the American-Statesman on Tuesday.

With the new campus, Oracle plans to grow its Austin workforce by 50 percent over the next few years, the company said.

Oracle said its 560,000-square-foot corporate campus is planned for a site between South Lakeshore Boulevard and Elmont Drive. Oracle is buying the 27 acres of undeveloped land for an undisclosed price from Austin-based Cypress Real Estate Advisors. The purchase closed Tuesday, the company said.

Armour did not provide specifics on how many buildings the campus is expected to include, or a timetable for when construction might begin.

It would be very distinctive. I think it would make a good juxtaposition in a skyline view with the independent and other large buildings in that vicinity.

I like this tower, but there are so many large rectangles already in Austin's skyline...this looks like yet another. It's high time they start incorporating some smooth, curviness in some of the upcoming buildings.

The University of Texas has sent out a RFQ to developers in hopes of redeveloping this block, here is one of the responses:

A tower of that height at that location would be a game changing building for the skyline , and it looks like the developer really has a strong history. Ill keep my fingers crossed.

AUSTIN (KXAN) — A major development project gets underway in Austin Monday morning. Today marks the ground breaking for The Independent, the tallest residential building west of the Mississippi passing the Austonian.

The former Austin Energy Control Center Building located at the corner of West and Third Streets will be demolished to make room for a 58 story 685 foot tall building that will be two feet and two stories taller than the Austonian.

A total of 370 units are already on sale. Prices start around $400,000 and go up to $3 million. Construction is expected to be complete by 2018.
