The FAA charts are arcane and complex. There is no blanket height limit over downtown, nor are the maps readily accessible. Different areas of downtown have different limits. The Fairmont zone is different from the 600 Guadalupe zone. Simply declaring "it should be 2000' and doesn't make sense" is lacking context.

I guess that's understandable. Honestly, we should have no limits on height. Let the planes fight through a maze of buildings trying to land. That kind of supports the rock & roll lifestyle of Austin residents, no? /s

Well the reality is there's no legitimate reason for planes to fly that close to DT or low enough that it would be a concern, especially since this is post 9/11. In general unless there is a special reason that has been granted by the federal government (such as the final flight of the shuttle on the back of a 747 as it flew low over DT) commercial planes tend to give wide berths from city centers. Since our runways run parallel to DT, we don't have the same issue as say San Diego.

The city is updating site plans applications today. The app for this project got an update dated yesterday. There's no new info, but it must be getting close to approval by now.

The site plan with the elevations was posted to the city's AULCC site on Tuesday.

ftp://ftp.ci.austin.tx.us/ATD_AULCC/...cape_PLANS.pdf

The tallest height is achieved when measuring from the southwest corner of the building at the lowest sea level elevation of 481 feet 8 inches.

842 feet 2 inches to the mechanical roof parapet/screen.

800 feet to the main roof.

786 feet to the highest occupied floor (the 65th floor).

53rd floor setback - 655 feet 4 inches

34th floor setback - 447 feet 4 inches

14th floor setback - 149 feet 4 inches

There is a discrepancy in the estimated start of construction listed in the two spreadsheets filed for AULCC yesterday. One lists the start date as sometime between this November and April 2019.  The other lists it as either January or February 2020. I hope the earlier dates are correct.

I see 491'-4". That would make it 832 feet. Am I misreading it?

(edit) Never mind. I see it.

Yeah, remember all the noise about how it could push up well past 1,000 feet?

Not including the speculation of possibly ending up at 70+ stories, it has only dropped from 870' to 842'. I'm not worried about 28'.

Ikr. I was like how can OKC beat us in height. As long as it stay above 800ft I'm satisfied.

I don't feel like we're in any sort of competition with OKC. But at least this tower will be flanked by two nearly 700 foot towers (683' & 690'), so it won't stick out like Devon tower. I really like Devon tower, but skylines dominated by a single tower are not aesthetically appealing IMO.

Not so much like Dubai since many of their "smaller" towers are still supertalls. I was thinking more along the lines of OKC:

I think Austin's skyline is turning into more of a Cleveland and Minneapolis look with three dominating towers and the bulk. Minneapolis does have more talls than we do, of course.

I love Minneapolis's skyline. I lived up that way for eight years, and it is much better in person than in photos. Cleveland's is not that impressive IMO.

Continuing with the off topic discussion...

One of my top 10 - maybe top 5 - favorite towers in the world is the Wells Fargo tower in Minneapolis. I had one of my biggest skyscraper geek moments when I was walking around downtown Minneapolis for the first time and walked up to and around this building. But the photos I took have been lost with the passing of time...
