I think that it is going to be ABSOLUTELY an AMAZING Christmas next year in Miami. There are so many many 40+ storey buildings broken ground right now, that by next xmas there will be dozens topped off and painted at least. In one more year it will be like waking up on xmas morning and looking outside and see a new snowfall, but in Miami it will be a new city that fell.

Dave, have you heard any further news on the Omni redevelopment? I tried to get Emporis to post that cluster of towers over a year ago, but since I'm just a fluke of the universe, I don't think they listen to me. Also, is there anything further about more of the Biscayne wall going up, i.e. Paramount Park, Freedom Square or are they also among the "dead" projects looking to be resurrected? Will we see another Riverfront tower (Cima) break ground next year? Just a few questions I'm posing about what we might see in the new year. Meanwhile, thanks for the holiday gift of the cam shots! They are great to monitor the progress of our favorite projects as we watch skyscraper history rise up in our midst! I'm sure it's not going to just stop with what's currently under construction right now or what is already scheduled to start next year [Infinity II, Villa Magna, Met 3]. Maybe we will get lucky and see the resurrection of all our favorite "dead" projects next year. Come on Element, Onyx 2, Flatiron, and Premiere Towers! Steve

I'm not Dave (obviously) but based on what I've read in Miami Today News and GlobeSt.com, neither Paramount Park nor Freedom Square are dead. The developers of Paramount Park recently started the construction of Paramount Beach in Sunny Isles and broke ground on Paramount Bay in Edgewater. This gives me the impression that Paramount Park could begin construction early next year but I don’t have any sources to prove it. Liberty Square, on the other hand, is caught up in a bit of bureaucracy with Miami-Dade College. The developers are giving the Freedom Tower and the building to which it's attached to Miami-Dade College as part of a deal that will allow them to begin construction. This article published the week of November 30th this year by Miami Today News sums up the latest developments on the site:
Quote:
Terra Group still preparing Freedom Tower to give to MDC
By Eric Kalis

Miami developer Terra Group has not officially transferred ownership of the landmark Freedom Tower to Miami Dade College's Wolfson Campus because company officials say more work needs to be done on the structure before the deal is closed.
Nearly one year after Terra Group promised to donate the former processing center for Cuban immigrants to the school, company COO David Martin said Monday that both sides are holding off on the transfer until workers finish repairing parts of the building.
"We are working daily with the college," Mr. Martin said. "We will complete the transfer when (College President Eduardo) PadrÛn feels it is appropriate. The tower has been stabilized."
Among Terra Group workers' tasks at the 80-year-old tower:
NMake sure the foundations are secure and watertight.
NRepair elevators and windows.
NUpdate mechanical, engineering and plumbing systems.

A major obstacle of the renovations has been ongoing construction on Biscayne Boulevard and surrounding streets, Mr. Martin said. Traffic congestion has forced company workers to find alternate routes for themselves and their equipment, he said.
The tower emerged as a makeshift way station for Cuban exiles in the 1960s. Immigrants came to the tower to receive documentation and be directed to family members in South Florida. The tower is the original headquarters of the Miami News & Metropolis, which left the tower in the 1950s. The building also was home to a small radio station.
Terra Group is planning a 63-story mixed-use complex with 585 residential units for space behind the tower, Mr. Martin said. The company will launch a marketing campaign and possibly break ground on the project next year, he said.
Once the company's repairs are finished, the tower "will shine and become an epicenter for immigration and cultural issues," Mr. Martin said. Miami Dade College "is the proper agent for the academic and institutional standards needed for the tower," he said.
The company will open the second floor of the tower next month to exhibit artwork of Cuban native Carlos Alfonzo.
Hopefully dave knows more about Cima than I do because I can’t really venture much of a guess. But if Mint is anything of a telltale, then it will probably be under construction sooner than we all expect.

Thanks, Paul! Any of you will do who has the inside scoop on anything. What you posted was encouraging! Looks like it's going to be a good year for new skyscraper construction in Miami. I will post anything noteworthy that I hear before you guys do, but we've got some pretty sharp and quick guys on this Miami thread who really do it proud. It seems we have a forum that's more than worthy to match what is happening around us, and you guys can take some damn good photos of it! Suggestions for skyline shots: The deck of the Rusty Pelican, 10th floor Mount Sinai Office Pavilion, and if any of you has any friends who have a high bay view from South Beach, that would make a great vantage point as well. Let the guys with cameras know, if they don't have any friends with the great views. Your photos will probably be of some value in the not so distant future as you document what is truly becoming American skyscraper history in the making. I've said it at least twice already, and I'll say it again! HAPPY NEW YEAR, GUYS!!! Looks like it will be! Steve

Let me just apologize in advance for all of the pics I’m about to post and the bandwidth I will waste but according to GlobeSt.com, Fortune International has just received $288M in loans to start the construction of Jade Ocean (pictured below).

Also, Island Garden, Shangri La’s mega yacht development on Watson Island just broke ground. Here are some of the old renderings.

And the newest rendering:

Coincidentally, I took a panorama from the site of the development about a week ago with my brother (scroll to the right).

Also, I don’t think anyone mentioned Regalia yet, which just started selling units starting at $6M, is now set to start construction in June. And I might as well throw in a pic of that one as well.

30-story Overtown tower planned with film studios, hotel

By Eric Kalis
A Miami developer plans to build on undeveloped Overtown land a 30-story mixed-use tower with film studios and a hotel to help attract entertainment professionals and put the city's emerging Entertainment District on the map.
PREMA, a development company owned by film producer Jordi Verite, plans to build a 400-foot mixed-use tower, MaxMiami, on 1.07 acres spanning Northeast Miami Place and First Avenue. The building is to feature a four-story shopping galleria topped by 11 stories of offices and recording studios for filmmakers and actors to lease for post-production work, a 163-room atrium hotel and 28 high-end condominium units.
Other planned amenities include a jazz plaza on the ground level fronting the galleria, pool terraces for hotel guests and a restaurant mezzanine at the top of the tower, said project architect Dean Lewis of DB Lewis Architecture + Design.
The fledgling Entertainment District "is a strip of high-end condos along the bay," Mr. Lewis said. "We have to develop in the underdeveloped pockets of land downtown. If not, the city will just be a strip of high-end condos along the water.
"This is a very original project that is still appropriate to today's market," he said. "Our client understands the needs of arts and entertainment professionals. We have a developer [Paul Murphy] interested and ready to build, and a number of arts and entertainment professionals have expressed interest in leasing space."
The company is applying green building standards in the project's design, implementing light-reflecting glass facades, water recirculation and an electronic valet parking system that reduces carbon monoxide emissions by placing cars on hydraulic lifts instead of having them driven up several floors to a parking space, Mr. Lewis said. The project will eventually apply for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design certification, he said.
Before applying for a building permit, PREMA needs the city to approve a zoning change on the site from liberal commercial to central commercial-residential, which would remove all height restrictions for the 30-story tower. The Zoning Advisory Board voted Monday to delay voting on the zoning change until the Feb. 26 meeting after a typographical error was discovered on the city's project site map. The development team had no objection to the month-long delay, which should not impact the project's timeline, Mr. Lewis said.
The company expects the zoning board to uphold the planning department's recommendation to approve the zoning change next month, Mr. Lewis said. Since the tower abuts high-density buildings in the central commercial zone, it should fulfill one of the major priorities of the city's zoning code rewrite Miami 21 — having smooth transitions from high- to low-density neighborhoods, he said.
"We believe our project makes the transition and is appropriate," Mr. Lewis said. "We cannot just pile up high-density buildings on the edge of the bay. This project is very site-sensitive. The idea is to re-urbanize the undeveloped pocket between the Upper East Side and North Miami Avenue along the 14th street Entertainment District."
Representatives of nearby property owner Jersy Ltd., a New York development company, wrote a letter to city officials supporting the zoning change, citing the project's potential to serve an entertainment purpose in the Omni area and extend downtown development westward.
The goal remains to apply for a building permit by the end of this year, Mr. Lewis said, with hopes of breaking ground and beginning foundation work early next year. The tower's construction is expected to take more than two years, he said.

Omni Development

I called (was transferred to a voice mail in Marketing) and emailed Arquitectonica about getting the Omni Development posted on Emporis. Maybe we won't see it posted on there until after it's under construction, but thought I'd let you know I tried. Emporis has yet to post Shangri-La's Island Gardens project too, but the Omni Development is 6 towers between 584 and 644 feet (see page 9 for rendering thanks to Dave8721), so really would like to see that posted if project is still alive. The skyline is starting to look pretty damn impressive from SR-836 approaching it from the west. Steve

I wouldn't hold your breath on the twin towers....FAA still won't agree on anything that tall on that site...
