Sadly, some self-proclaimed "experts" have taken over this web site and turned something that could be fun for lots of people into a just a series of lectures by windbags. I got tired of having everything I said criticized. If I said "The Moon has lots of craters." somebody would say "No, ignorant peasant, those are circular mountain ranges." It's hard to not take such put-downs personally. I have followed this site for years and seen lots of people come and go. I check it frequently but don't post because I don't appreciate the abuse or, even worse, being totally ignored. I expect this was a huge mistake, but it's sad that a forum with such potential is being wasted. By the way, anybody who appreciates 3D art would see my Philadelphia Temple model as a great achievement and it was a waste casting my pearl into this barnyard enclosure.

There is so much pathetic nerd drama on this thread it is quite amusing. Maybe there should be a thread dedicated to just that. Its not here. This thread should be for thoughtful discusion about things going on in Salt Lake. I feel like I'm back in High school with all these petty comments and jabs... UGH....

Yes, and everybody that has announced their departure, has ended up returning. Some don't post as often, others return to their normal posting as if nothing ever happened, but they almost always return.

I also felt that the response to SLC Project's opinion on the unfinished crates being third world was overly dramatic. I felt UtPlanner's response to the drama was perfect. Infact, I apologize to Lee(Projects) for not also myself responding in a similar manner.

Lee, just tell the occasional drama that crops up to take a chill pill. Realize, that there are far more on this forum that appreciate your participation than not.

No one has time to follow all of the forums. What little checking in that I do accomplish occasionally with Denver/Colorado Springs, Phoenix, and Los Angeles, it's no different. There's always the occasional dust-up, and there always will be.

I'm not sure why people get offended on a forum like this. We're literally, for the most part, a bunch of strangers sitting at work/home sharing our personal notions. If this was a group of my close friends or family then some of you might be able to offend or bother me.

Just an FYI-- some people are coming in this afternoon to the office to talk about a project downtown. I know it involves an office building though I'm not exactly sure the size. This would be in and around West Temple and 400 South. If it's worth mentioning I will definitely share it.

I disagree, my response was passionate, not overly dramatic. But I guess now Im the bad guy for sharing my opinion and defending SLC, not the shipping crates, but SLC.

If I left the forum every time someone had something negative, or constructive to say I would never come back. I think its good to have people challenge our ideas, thoughts, and opinions. For instance: I didnt like the look of the new UPAC but after many responses to my opinion (some being nice, some a bit rude) it helped me see it in a totally different perspective and now I appreciate its design fully and am excited to see how it turns out!

I for one am glad their are many opinions and different points of view on this forum. Its good to stop and check ourselves (myself included) and challenge our beliefs every once in a while.

Drama or not, you can be sure I will always respond to comments i feel to be ignorant and come from a place of privilege.

I agree with you (& SL Projects), there are too many 'Self-Proclaimed experts' on these things; thus the reason I rarely comment. It is true if you don’t agree with the majority then your comment(s) are branded as wrong. I once made a comment on the Boise page and they all had a Shit fit, but those 'Self-Proclaimed experts' are “right”

It’s funny to me because my work and the people I know relates to what we talk about in these forms; yet others apparently are the experts. Oh well

I believe the best ideas are those that can be vigorously defended. I also believe in having strong opinions and jumping into the fray to express them. However, I also recognize that once I do I may find my previously held ideas don't stand up to criticism very well. That is when I have to back down and rethink my assumptions.

That's why I come to this forum. At least partially why. The other reason is to hear the news. So whether you're a debater or a news sharer (PHOTOS!) I appreciate all the input here.

A little update on the area around 400 S and West Temple, as we all know Moe's Grill moved a couple of months back and I noticed today that the Reuel's spot is now vacant. Reuel's opened up a new location in the old Broadway Pharmacy approx 250 E 300 S, just east of the Broadway condos.

The, what appears to be, one story building in the formerly Moe's parking lot is being framed right now, but sadly still appears to be just one story.

I also drove past the Boyer building on 200 E and 100 S, the south portion is up to two stories and it is already very tall for that location. At 7 or 8, however many floors it is going to be, it will be a pretty substantial building for that area. I realize that the first floor will probably be taller than the rest, but just at 2 floors and it's pretty tall. Obviously not skyline changing, but good density for the edge of east downtown.

I also checked out the LaPorte State St project and sadly the crane was still in the down position, of course this was a couple of minutes after 5 so who knows.

I have heard reports that the building that will be taking the place of Mo's and Ruel's is going to be between 5 and 10 stories. The spot to the north of Mo's I don't know what this will be nor entail.

FM, not sure if you noticed or not but the Goodyear on the corner of 4th and West Temple is also moving. This may mean that there is something bigger coming to the area.

This is encouraging news. It'd be pretty sad if a one-story building was being replaced with a one-story building.

I agree that it looks like it is one story tall, but that doesn't make sense because that area is zoned for at least a specific height (right?) which I would assume is above one story. It does make me a little confused.

Replacing the parking lot with a one story building isn't so bad if they are also replacing the current one story building with a 5-10 story building

Those lots on 400 S and West Temple are zoned D-1. According to the zoning regulations:

Height Regulations: No corner building shall be less than one hundred feet (100') nor more than three hundred seventy five feet (375') in height. The minimum one hundred foot (100') high portion of the building shall be located not farther than five feet (5') from the lot line along front and corner lot lines. Buildings higher than three hundred seventy five feet (375') may be allowed in accordance with the provisions of subsections E6a and E6b of this section.

So, they would need a zoning variance to build anything less than 100 feet on that location if they are destroying the buildings currently there. I do not think that the planning commission would recommend this zoning variance to the city council.

I stopped by the State St. project yesterday morning about 8 am on my way to work and the crane was indeed working, but it is hard to imagine a more anemic project, I counted 6 guys working just after 8 am in the morning. I have a pretty good vantage point from my office at One Utah and I do see the crane moving a few times during the day but they aren't breaking any speed records.
