Well, ^^^ that pic does tell a story. Yes, Dubai has a ton of supertalls and talls, but it is nowhere near the density of Chicago or NYC. Even if you sort of shoved all of the towers together, Dubai just isn't the Loop or Manhattan. Granted, Dubai is a new kind of beast, a city of the desert, but something it "isn't all there." The layers of history, the variety of materials and technologies present in so many cities from Moscow to Paris to Los Angeles.
It is sort of like a team in baseball. A team that only shoots for the home run, and never the single, the double, the steal, the squeeze play. Just heroics, all Barry Bonds and no "team." I don't know if that made sense, but wanted to say it.
The Burj Dubai is a great tower, in a great city, but it isn't:
