I can see an architect building Aqua Mark II. This time the glass follows the curvature. The concrete doesn't complete the look the architect should of wanted. It's chicago, you don't need an outdoor patio. Poor weather most of the year.

I don't recall seeing this particular article posted here before...

Magellan Development has new room for hotel in Aqua tower

11/26/08

"...The space can accommodate between 215 to 300 rooms, depending on the configuration. In the case of Fairmont, the hotel was opting to offer all suites, which scaled down the number of rooms to 225..."

"...We are very particular; we want a concept that will go with the overall composition of the building," Gordon adds. "Aqua is a unique structure, so we want the hotel to match that..."

"...John Karver, senior vice president with CBRE, says he hopes to have the preliminary marketing work wrapped up in the next two to three weeks. Shortly after, he expects to see "a number of proposals" on table from both national and international hotel outfits.

Gordon says that despite the financial markets, he remains confident that the Aqua stands on its own as a unique sell for a distinctive hotel that has more too offer than room and board basics.

"Obviously, it would have been a lot easier before all of it happened, but because the property is so special, we are confident it will go..."

I'm pretty sure they'd take a HoJo, without much arm twisting.

Ha!

He's got a point though. Look at how barren my back porch is in June...

Jeanne Gang Interview

Here's a 2 part interview with Jeanne Gang (the main architect of this building and founder of Studio Gang Architects)

Part 1: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qAeEXKrwXNo

Part 2: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bjE7-wQMXuo&feature=channel

It's from early 2007, but it discusses the design philosophy mostly, so it's just as informative today as it was 22 months ago.

(I'm pretty sure nobody posted this yet, but if they did: sorry)

way too difficult and expensive to do than

and no, the weather isn't poor most of the year.

even though i don't live in a highrise, i was out on my porch almost everyday this past summer.

I look forward to going out and chillin on the patio when it's cold...even subzero temps. But even if you don't like the cold in Chicago you have plenty of patio time. I think if it was done sort of opposite, just with the glass and not the patios, it would look diffrent, but give the same effect in the end...not any more dramatic.
