Good work, Dan!

Here's a picture of Superior 110 from 10/31 that I never posted. By the way, Steely Dan, the building is still listed as Opus 110 on the first page and the website is no longer active. Here's an updated link http://www.superior110.com.

A few South Loop buildings are also topped out or coming close. I think that Library Tower is topped out (perhaps for a couple weeks now) and the Dwight Building steel frame reached the top a couple weeks ago although I don't think they've done the roof yet. 1400 Museum Park may also be TO, if not very close, and Burnham Pointe has been rising extremely quickly - I think they are on floor 28 now, out of I want to say 30.

Thanks for the Trio pic & update SolarWind. Much appreciated -- seems slow going on the tower.

^ Not sure if that's a good idea. With Emergency rooms generally on the ground floor, and operating rooms in the basement levels (usually), you don't want large delays or distances to the inpatient wards above.

couldn't high speed express elevators that specifically by-pass all the parking levels take care of that though? i mean, i live in a 60 story building and a straight elevator run from the ground floor to the roof takes about 20 seconds (roughly 3 floors per second). so let's say the hospital had 15 levels of parking in it, you're only talking about an extra 5 seconds to get to the inpatient wards, which i don't really think is gonna make or break too many peoples' lives. if it comes down to 5 seconds as the critical make it or break it point, then you're probably on your way out soon enough as it is.

Thanks!
I wrote this several pages back on the trio, but I never got a response.
The building is right by my place and I know that they are still working on it.
The only question I have is about what type of highrise crain they're using.

Rush Children's Hospital is already in the IMD. Children's says they're excited about the clinical possibilities of being next to NMH, sharing some facilities, having various specialists right at hand, etc. I think another motivating factor is where young doctors get excited about working, and Streeterville beats the West Side.

I hate to make too much of it, but I also have questions about the helipad, which will be right at the base of windshear coming off the lake and straight down Water Tower Place, or westerlies funneled between Olympia Center and Park Hyatt.

^ I think that would be fine. To be honest, though, I have yet to see a hospital that has several parking levels between the ER and the wards above it. It kind of makes me wonder if there is a law against that (ie elevators aren't working and doctors need to quickly make it from the 1st to the 4th floor to perform life support on a dying patient, etc). I imagine if there is a code blue and the elevators are out, going up to the 11th floor would be quite a chore (plus a detriment to the patient).

Don't you think that the helicopter pilots and engineers that are doing the input on the design of this hospital would have thought of that already? I feel that question is along the lines of the "I hear this region is seismically active, have the engineers accounted for earthquakes" type questions.

Not trying to be mean, but I think the people who actually fly the helicopters and design the landing pads for them know more about them than the people who are questioning their choices.

^ And herein lies the fundamental problem with NIMBYism: amateurs making decisions that the professionals should be making. (this is not an attack on Mr. Downtown, btw--just a general point)

^ Which again leads me to my thinking that alderman shouldn't have much authority when it comes to land use decisions. What is an alderman besides an amateur who was able to get elected?

For some reason in the US we prefer what is popular to what is best. (By the way this is the same reason mariah carey is the all time best selling female artist, i think)

One a more thread-like topic, what is going on at madison and franklin? it looks pretty cool, they knocked off an entire side of a building and it looks like they are expanding towards the east (near the parking garage). Right now it looks like a building that was fed through a table saw.

Not surprising then that a Stop the Andrew organization has already formed.

The only reason I link to their website is because they have some nice elevations of the building (although the townhome portion isn't shown)

Many urban planners will tell you that density is a good thing. Density, they will tell you, is what makes cities work as "machines for living."

What they don't mention is that density is a pain in the you-know-what to live with.

Higher density means more noise, more traffic, more pollution. It means that traveling short distances takes longer than it should. And higher density means more opportunities for criminals, and therefore, more crime.

Wind sheer has very little effect on helicopter traffic, besides the hospital will be equiped with a state of the art weather forcasting system, more advanced than what existis at any hospital in Illinois. There are very high standards for what is considered permitted flying weather. The Pilots will never seek to endandger thier lives and the lives of patients in transport. Any residents's argument that states otherwise is pure bullshit. It was pretty funny to watch one of the heads of the company contracted for hospital helicopter services get irritated at the randomly repeated ignorant questions by hounding NIMBYs at community meetings.

Those "Stop the Andrew" people are really annoying, more density=more crime... Right, that's why Streeterville, the Gold Coast, and River North are criminal hot spots and Pullman is a nice, quiet, safe neighborhood...

I'm sending them an e-mail telling them that, as a student of Loyola University, I find their views backward, close minded, and completely unbased. I am also going to point out that many urban planners will tell you density is good because they actually are educated in what they are talking about, unlike the "Stop the Andrew committee" none of whom know anything about Urban Planning.
