Speaking of City Hall, when did they start doing the Las Vegas light show with the lighting on the building? Last night, the trim lighting was being sequentially turned off and on, from top to bottom. Has this been going on for awhile, or was Moonbeam kissing the sky?

it has been that way since before the olympics. The sequence and timing of the lights is actually a clock. Was part of the cities art legacy or something like that.

To add to that, the "light show" only happens every hour on the hour.

Speaking of the city's Olympic art legacy, I would love to know what became of that light vase that was under the south end of the Cambie St. Bridge. Crews removed it about 6 months ago and there has been a pylon sitting in it's place ever since.

that light vase never actually worked properly, it was supposed to sense people moving past it and then light things would react to it. It was always broken and in the final year/months it was just a few LED's working.

Interactive art pieces never work out because of maintenance requirements.
A number of the art deco LEDs on Cambie have burnt out (although the Yaletown ones I;ve seen seem to be doing ok)

I believe those Cambie lights were also part of the Olympic art legacy. The only permanent interactive art piece that I've seen that I would label as truly successful is Crown Fountain in Millennium Park, Chicago.

6th & Willow:

Construction of this 6th Avenue townhouse project is wrapping up, under two years after the demolition of the Apple Market mini mall that used to be located there.

The 25 unit townhouse project is one of the last credited to Macfarlane Green Biggar before their split, but really this is a Michael Green design and it’s in sharp contrast to many of the 80s postmodern buildings and stucco boxes in the surrounding Fairview Slopes area. It’s a difficult project to photograph as there’s no sidewalk on the other side of 6th Avenue, but it has a number of interesting details. The second row of townhouses (in the courtyard) are seriously contemporary white boxes.

The front of the building (facing 6th Avenue) has a rusted steel frame (we assume it’s corten steel, like the panels on the Willow Street facade). The frame acts as a screen onto 6th Avenue, which has a significant traffic flow, but allows the north light into the homes with almost no interruption.

Cambie & 7th:

This project was first here in October 2011 and is now completing construction. Designed by W T Leung, it’s a 10-storey 51 unit building replacing Summer’s Auto Body repair shop. The architect has designed a lot of the buildings in this neighbourhood, including both office and mixed use buildings along West Broadway (the most recently completed before this was Wesley, featured elsewhere on this blog).

Although he’s designed a lot of buildings, some of the biggest schemes the W T Leung office has designed are just showing up. There’s a 12 storey building on Kingsway, and also a 17 storey building proposed for Westbank Projects at 601 Main Street which will replace an abandoned Casino.

This building is tall for the neighbourhood, and while it isn’t very different from the render that was posted on site, it’s more of a background building than some of the more complex designs that will soon be completed elsewhere in the Main & Cambie areas.

- just thought they were crash barriers for traffic accidents.

This building is on the NW corner of Oak & W.14th. Development app. says 11 stories with a heritage bonus. I guess they're retaining the facade, but likely not the affordable, large original suites!

Sixth and Willow looks sickly ghetto. Every time I go there past my wife, she thinks it's an old building falling apart, and I have to agree with her. Who would actually pay to live in something that depressing looking?

Ghetto might not be the right word but in my personal opinion I do agree that its sort of ugly. Those puppies are not cheap either.. They are supposed to be averaging $1.1M for 1,500 sf townhomes set up right against a very busy street.

i love the building.

not in my price range, nor would I like living on 6th, but I love the buidling itself
