Once upon a time, long ago, I lived in South Ozone Park, and my siblings went to the high school nearby (John Adams). The casino already brings in a lot of money for the state, but it's surrounded by residential neighborhoods, so I don't know what the economic spillover from the casino would be.

Also, the city needs more housing, but I don't like the "plantation" style housing they are proposing here. The housing would be built around what is currently the racetrack, which the state will be closing.

Something will be done with the racetrack land, independent of the casino. But Resorts World may add another hotel even without a license. The two “racinos” aren’t planning to shut down, and would face increased competition from potentially 3 new casinos. They would likely make some improvements one way or another.

that is perhaps true!

but don't you think the Western Yards will happen with or without the casino? It'll probably accelerate it just a few years I'd imagine. So I wonder if longterm it's really such an advantage?

The Hudson Yards would get developed, eventually. Times Square will keep going regardless. Coney Island is the one that needs this development because it's specifically the type of development the City went through that rezoning for. This type of opportunity doesn't come around often for Coney. The time is now. The Con Ed site is the wrong location, and Silverstein's proposal just seems an afterthought.

As for the casino near Citi Field, yes that parking lot needs to be more than a parking lot. It should be put to active use as what it is, parkland. That can contain many things, a casino isn't and shouldn't be one of them. The Bronx casino proposal is too out of the way from a transit point of view, and makes no sense considering all of the options on the table. I don't know that a Nassau casino, and especially a Yonkers casino would be the maximum draw the state is looking for, as compared to other options. Aqueduct is fine as is, but also wouldn't be the maximum draw.

Times Square and Hudson Yards (Times Sq West) are a constant and endless draw of people. The tourism traffic is a steady flow. Coney Island, while seasonal, has shown it can be a big draw, and has the transit capacity to do so. But right now it is seasonal because it lacks indoor activity. The City has been trying to push it to a 'year round destination, but that won't happen if there's only outdoor amusements. Give us the Coney no matter what.

oh yeah hy will be developed eventually, no doubt, but … when is eventually? look at how long its been dormant already. if a casino gets it built out right away then that is a lot of extra years of collecting hy taxes on the casino and other developments that will spring up there — vs some unknown eventually that is obviously far off.

coney can have the other casino, although its not really fair to aquaduct, or the other empire racino.

How is it not fair? Especially considering Resorts World already got one of the other state licenses. Everyone knew this was coming. I remember when the Aqueduct casino was first proposed, they wanted to close the Javits, and build a mega convention center at Aqueduct. But that was ONLY if they were allowed to be the only casino in New York City. But that’s not how New York operates. It’s not a one and done city. Even now, with just three, I think they are downplaying success. Smaller markets like Las Vegas and even Atlantic City can offer multiple casinos within walking distance of one another, but somehow, the Big Apple can’t hack it. The two racinos can continue to operate. Resorts World can proceed with improvements around the property it controls, as could Empire City. With only 3 new licenses being offered in the entire region, New York needs to put its best foot forward.

Judging casinos & communities: Coney Island needs people who believe in it

For too long, many have opposed any opportunity to bring jobs, economic development and other improvements to Coney Island. These people have failed Coney Island time and again and created the situation we have today: a seasonal economy with limited opportunities for growth.

because they were first and should have first crack being as they were hamstrung — and more so because pretty sure the three casinos would suck away at least some of the weak gambling options $ from the racinos.

No, that they were first has nothing to do with it. As I've said, they knew there was going to be multiple casinos in the city, and they have a casino license already not too far from the city, in the Catskills. They got a license to operate the "racino" at Aqueduct. The first official licenses in the city will be awarded now. Besides, they are making money worldwide, more than you can fathom. Losing a little business at Aqueduct won't hurt them in the least.

NYC lobbyists racked up nearly $131 million last year promoting casinos, soccer stadium, real estate

Entities tied to Mets billionaire owner Steve Cohen and Seminole Hard Rock Entertainment led the charge — spending more than $2 million combined on a stable of lobbyists last year as they unveiled a sprawling $8 billion casino, hotel and music venue dubbed “Metropolitan Park” of vacant lots next to CitiField.

The Cohen companies — New Green Willets and Queens Future — spent $946,809 and $450,000 respectively, or nearly $1.4 million combined, according to the report.

His firms retained seven different lobbying outfits including:

-former Bronx Democratic Party chairman Marco Crespo;

-former Queens Councilman Julissa Ferrera-Copeland/Hollis Public Affairs;

-the Mirram Group, headed by former Bronx Democratic leader Roberto Ramirez and Luis Miranda — the father of playwright Lin Manuel-Miranda;

-Moonshot Strategies, co-founded by Jenny Sedlis, who previously ran a pro-Eric Adams Super Pac and pro-charter school group, and the Tusk Group headed Bradley Tusk, who worked for former Mayor Mike Bloomberg.

Kasirer’s client Stony Brook University won the competitive city bid to run the $700 million “New York Climate Exchange” lab on Governors Island, which she considered one of the year’s highlights.

Kasirer also represents MGM Resorts, which is vying for a full casino license in Yonkers, and Vornado Realty.

Seminole Hard Rock, Cohen’s gaming partner, spent $660,000 on lobbying for the project — with $540,000 going to the lobbyists with the firm Actum Ca Opc and Green Book Strategies, run by husband-wife duo, Austin and Jennifer Shafran.

Meanwhile in a project next door to Cohen’s proposed project, CFG Stadium Group spent $540,000 to win approval to build the Big Apple’s first ever soccer stadium in Willets Point for the York City Football Club.

Queens Borough President Donovan Richards joked that he’s become popular given the lobbying on economic development projection in Queens, particularly at Willets Point with the casino proposal and soccer stadium deal.

“I certainly have no shortage of meetings,” Richards said, while crediting the lobbyists for both projects for take community needs into account.

ironic you refute the earlier racinos should even be given any consideration for full casinos, then post an article about hardcore lobbying efforts for other sites.

Lobbying in New York is nothing new. That's how business is done, that's why it's legal. You seem to think that Resorts World should be given a bonus for opening up early, as if they did the city/state a favor. They did not, and it is actually the other way around. Business is business.

At least nine New York City bidders are expected to compete for three downstate licenses that are up for grabs once the process formally begins.

Under state rules, applicants must obtain local zoning approvals before they’re considered by the gaming commission — which could mean each of the nine casino bids has to submit individual land use applications to the planning department, potentially overburdening the agency.

The citywide zoning plan would help avoid that, though some of the bidders will still need to obtain site-specific land use changes.

There are currently two processes going on - at the state and local levels - to get everything lined up correctly, and legally for the licenses to be awarded in the New York City region. I don't know why the local region waited, possibly because they thought the state process would override local zoning. But that turned out to be not the case. And so we have multiple approvals complicating the process.

The good news, from the City standpoint, is that they are doing a citywide rezoning to allow for casinos, although that is directly limited to only the three casinos the State will grant licenses to. With that in place, individual proposals must only get required changes as far as the buildings and uses go.

So basically, there are 3 separate bodies that must be navigated to get a license.

1. The Community Advisory Committee (CAC), which must get an approval from 4/6 of its 6 members.

2. Once the CAC gives its approval, the applicant must then be reviewed by the Gaming Facility Location Board (GFLB), which ensures that every obligation is met (fees, zoning, community support). They will select up to 3 applications for licensing.

3. Finally, the body that actually grants the licenses, the New York State Gaming Commission. It is the Commission that then digs deeper to guarantee all applicants meet desired goals and worthiness.

It's a convoluted process. But the state doesn't care. It will make a LOT of money either way.

The Coney is being pitched by a consortium involving Oklahoma-based Chickasaw Nation’s Global Gaming Solutions in partnership with New York-based entitles Saratoga Casino Holdings, Thor Equities, and Legends.

Coney Island is currently limited on public space, with the beach being the primary exception. The Coney developers say the rooftop could become a place for the community to meet and mingle, play, sunbathe, read, and relax.

“It is a unique space that makes for a variety of uses, including a calming respite, children’s play, a place to enjoy food and beverage, and take in the art installations.”

The rendering provided shows an outdoor café with lush landscaping and unobstructed views of New York Bay.

The New York Gaming Facility Location Board will grade each casino bid based on four weighted factors, with 70% of the mark based on the proposal’s “economic activity and business development.” Three other factors, “local impact siting,” “workforce enhancement,” and “diversity framework,” will each account for 10%.

Along with thousands of good-paying careers, tens of millions of dollars in new annual local tax revenue, and possibly new public transportation to Brooklyn’s south end, the casino backers say the resort would transform Coney Island into a year-round destination.

“We can completely reactivate the whole Boardwalk area into a new entertainment district,” Paul Pippin, chief operating officer of Global Gaming Solutions, told Casino.org in January.
