The last one gave it away! All I'll say is it's amazing how just a couple years can make fifteen floors difference!

Anyway, congrats on the new place. Looks nice!

Haha, congratulations on solving the mystery! All the pieces are indeed there, but a bit of logical thinking was required, eh?

Do you know which building we are in?

I called Sovereign way back when you hinted you were moving... What else could it be?!

I did notice that, but Sovereign doesn't have nearly as many "floors" as our building. So it is not Sovereign.

Metroplace I'd guess. Your shots of Rainier make me think you're pretty close to the crest of the hill.

What's the prize for guessing right? Free tour and a sausage?

Aww, well least I got picture. After the last provincial election I still haven't got my Costco hot dog.

Ontario is definitely more expensive. The only people who say it is less are people writing articles backed by the private insurance industry who want to see the demise of public funded systems so they can ride roughshod over BC.

In Ontario it actually depends on who you are. If you are a male under 25, you pay the most, regardless of your driving record. It's legalized age and sex discrimination. I have friends who went to University in Ontario and they all paid somewhere between $4000 and $7000 a year for insurance.

Sex and age also play a factor in Alberta, so while it may seem like the "average" in Alberta is around the same in BC, many people pay way higher than that, just based on their age.

We are by no means cheap compared to some of the other provinces, but we also have more foreign drivers (people who grew up accustomed to different rules and habits of the road, even from other provinces and US states) as well as more fraud and theft, and more dangerous roads, than provinces like Saskatchewan and Prince Edward Island.

If we ditched ICBC and went private like Ontario, I have no doubts that if you are a male under 25, you would be paying $10,000/year on insurance.

That's how insurance should work. Charging high risk groups more than low risk groups makes perfect sense.

Driving record when you're under-25 says absolutely nothing.

Ironically I looked up Metroplace on Google Images to refresh my memory and your photo of the building was the one that came up. Congrats, one of my fave ones in Burnaby looks-wise.

Oh, I am sure plenty of my photos will turn up in the search results going forward.

It is actually quite funny how we ended up here. We were recently not following Craigslist ads actively, but happened to check them when this unit was posted for the first time. The ad was very humble and didn't mention the floor or the fact that it is a bloody penthouse at all! I of course picked it up quite quickly from the attached photos and made it sure that we would come and check it out. If for nothing else, at least I would have had the chance to take photos of the view!

Upon visit we fell in love with the size, everything being new, the huge patio and of course, the view. We knew we wanted the place and luckily we beated few others that applied for it. And the best thing? The rent for this unit is actually pretty fine for what it is and much lower than what I have seen for other penthouses in Metrotown (granted, those have felt overpriced to me).

The only downside is that we don't know how long we will be able to hold onto this suite, as we only have a standard 1-year fixed term contract. We asked for a 2-year contract, but nobody does those or open-ended contracts these days. So there is always the risk of having to move out if the suite is sold, like happened with One Wall Centre.

But even if it comes to the worst outcome, at least we have had the chance to live in one of the highest apartments in the whole bloody metropolitan area! That is quite something and we will always have that!!

Cool.

It will be interesting to hear reports of how you like the area and whether the tradeoff of price/height vs location works for you.

This thread is not just for me, but it is the official "everything under the Sun" thread. Glad you have enjoyed it, though.

Too early to say, but it is quiet here in Metrotown. I will let you guys know what I think of the area after having spent few months in here first.

Bizarre, irrational and hysterical market

A one bedroom condo in Burnaby listed as $399900 goes to the highest bidder at $520000 after 15 offers in 2 days. Listing price is purposely below market value to attract the widest attention. After designated viewing times . Then is time to submit offers. The only way to reverse this trend is every body cool down and COLLECTIVELY REFUSE TO BUY.

This market has me considering selling a rental condo I had planned to keep "forever". It's truly insane, at least in some markets. Proof the crash is nigh.
