Just as a followup, got off the phone with mom. Apparently it's true, there will be a Brick coming in to Woodstock. They're going to set up in the old Met/SAAN location in Carleton Mall (which seems a bit strange for their store setup, but we'll see). She said there weren't any signs up yet either so it could be something else....

*Edit to add*

It's a go. They're supposed to open in Early September. I haven't been up to see it with my own eyes yet, and the Brick's website doesn't hint at anything yet, but we should see something for certain soon.

* Edit again*

And it's on www.thebrick.com 's website now as "Opening Soon"

Ottawa committing $500,000 to health clinic

Published on August 16, 2012

L’ARDOISE — A commitment of $500,000 in federal money to a new health centre will be announced Saturday.

Enterprise Cape Breton Corp. has advised that an announcement will be made at 10 a.m. at the L’Ardoise Jolly Club by Sen. Michael MacDonald. Steve Sampson, chair of the Kingston Memorial Clinic’s fundraising committee, confirmed it will involve Ottawa’s commitment to the health centre project.

In all, the replacement of the Dr. W.B. Kingston Memorial Health Centre is expected to cost $1.5 million. The centre’s current building is more than 100 years old.

In January, the province announced it will contribute $500,000 to the project.

Richmond municipal council has already committed $250,000. The centre’s own fundraising efforts over the past two years to date have had a goal of $250,000.

I see ExploreNet is building an awesome new office in Woodstock on the site of the old hospital. Saw it in the Bugle-Observer yesterday! Pretty great news for Woodstock and Carleton County. Though, the county has gone through the tough times in New Brunswick pretty well.

Interesting; I thought the province was hoping to use that site for the new Elementary school to replace CES. Still, it's good to see something going up there. While the county is a bit rough, Woodstock's been doing well overall; it's at the upper end of the part of the province that is still ticking.

N.B. will pay $8M to relocate flooded Perth-Andover homes
Quote:
The New Brunswick government will pay up to $8 million to relocate or flood-proof low-lying homes in Perth-Andover that were hit by record flooding last spring, Local Government Minister Bruce Fitch announced on Tuesday.

Fitch made the announcement in the western village that was devastated by the March flooding.

The flood-mitigation measures are also being offered to homeowners in Tobique First Nation, Fitch said as some local residents looked on.

"There was no quick fix and no easy answers, and that is why we took the time required to properly evaluate the study provided by the Flood Mitigation Group," he said in a statement.

"We are now moving forward with action that will have a lasting impact on the safety of area residents.”

Future risk 'relatively high'
The review committee, made up of community, provincial and federal representatives, said it was "reasonable to consider relocation of the most seriously affected residences and to consider flood-proofing other affected properties."

The risk to Perth-Andover and Tobique First Nation is "relatively high," with a flood event occurring about every five years over the past decade, the committee said.

Flooding in March caused a state of emergency to be declared in Perth-Andover, with about one-third of the western village’s 1,770 residents being forced to leave their homes.

The flood level was roughly 1.5 metres higher than the last major flood in 1987.

A total of 83 residential properties were damaged. Of those, 11 have been, or will be demolished.

Several businesses were also damaged, along with the local hospital and high school.

The Tobique First Nation was also evacuated and residents were transported to safe locations.

The review committee also recommended further investigation into how the provincial government can improve its risk assessment of potential ice break-ups and enhance its monitoring and flood forecasting capacity to provide real-time flow and water level monitoring, movement and ice jam formation.

A follow-up report on three ice management options — ice control measures, ice growth suppression measures, and ice cutting and breaking measures — is expected in mid-October.

This is not the first time the provincial government has stepped in to buy homes of citizens who lived in flood-prone areas.

The New Brunswick government bought out the homes of 22 people following a series of floods across the province in 2010. The 22 homes, which were damaged beyond repair, met specified criteria set out by the government in the disaster financial assistance program.

Accidentally posted this in the Atlantic Canada pictures thread instead of this one, but I suppose I'll post it here as well haha. This is the new civic centre in St. Stephen getting underway. I remember being in middle school when people first started talking about it so it's been a long time coming!

That's right down on the water isn't it? Really exciting project for St. Stephen! I'll have to get pictures of the old Border Arena before this new Civic Centre is completed.

Marine research co-op wants to build waterfront centre

Published on October 28, 2012

SYDNEY — A marine research co-operative in Cape Breton is asking Facebook users to help them build a waterfront centre in Grand Etang.

The Gulf Aquarium and Marine Station Co-operative can win a $30,000 first prize for the Atlantic region by getting the most votes on a Facebook site for the National Co-op Challenge.

Gretchen Hull, a founder of the co-operative, says its entry was about its plans for a waterfront marine centre at Grand Etang. The cash prize would go to paying an architect and sea-water marine-system expert to come up with designs and cost estimates for the waterfront centre.

There was an article in the Telegraph Journal today about the possible creation of a Rural Community from five local service districts: Sussex, Hammond, Waterford, Cardwell, and Studholm. These communities surround Sussex and Sussex Corner. The combined population of these LSDs is over 8,000. There is a Facebook group with the name of Kings East Rural Community.

I'm still waiting for the amalgamation of Sussex and Sussex Corner.

Up in Woodstock, the new Connel Road Irving is probably 3/4 complete. KFC will be going in that spot too from the sounds of it, moving both of them to WalMart. By the looks of it, it'll be car-traffic only; not a truck stop like Murrays or the PetroCan are.

Also it was announced that a Pita Pit will be opening up Soon too; a sign is up now outside WalMart so I suspect it will mean another minimall segment going up between WalMart and the Irving. (Unless it goes in the Irving with KFC)

I haven't heard to confirm one way or another; but mom mentioned that Pizza Delight is going to build a new restaurant out towards Walmart as well; that end of towns really becoming our food district.

Snapped a couple pics from Woodstock on my way home.

This is the new Irving that will replace Conell Road Irving. KFC is going in there too.

This is across the road from the new Irving (and a little closer to town). There are actually two buildings being built in there. One will be a new Gym, and I haven't heard what the other will be.

There is going to be a new Best Western Plus built adjacent to the new Garcelon Civic Centre in St. Stephen. The hotel will have between 90-100 rooms. The ground floor will have professional commercial space and a seafood/steakhouse restaurant. The second floor will have a wellness spa and the fifth floor will have 18,000 square feet of luxury penthouse suites for lease or sale.

There is currently a bid in front of Sussex council to build a $30-million Seniors Complex. The complex would sit on a 14 acre parcel of land off Morrow Avenue. It would include 11 condo-style duplexes, three 24-unit apartment complexes, and a 72-bed nursing home style assisted living facility. This would total 166 units.

"We're talking $30 Million to be invested in stages. This is the largest combined residential and commercial project the town has ever seen. This whole proposal is a tremendous fit for Sussex." - Mayor Marc Thorne

Good news. Sussex has to be the most ideally situated town in NB, being equidistant from all three cities. Throw in the potash mines, the verdant farmland and Poley Mountain and you have a pretty nice darn small town!

That is all true, and when you consider the following..

Sussex - pop. 4,312

Sussex Corner - pop. 1,495
Sussex Parish - pop. 2,427
Cardwell Parish - pop. 1,414
Norton - pop. 1,301

Suddenly you're looking at 11,000 in the general Sussex area, which is pretty good. I think an ideal size for Sussex would be about 25,000 given its location between the three major cities.

Amherst welcomes new downtown complex proposal
January 25, 2013 - 7:07pm BY MICHAEL GORMAN TRURO BUREAU

Quote:

AMHERST — A proposed development for downtown Amherst will literally rise from the ashes and enhance the town’s revitalization efforts.

“I’m very happy,” said Mayor Robert Small. “It fits in with our whole downtown redevelopment. Talk about a silver lining in a grey cloud.”

Small is talking about developer Alex Filimon’s project, a four-story building that would have in the range of 40 apartments and commercial space on the main level.
