Their Corporate parent went bankrupt (again) at the end of 2007, http://www.thespec.com/article/281508

Probably part of their ongoing re-organization.

Saw The Derby had construction fence (blue rental fence) up around it the other week. Perhaps some demolition and construction will start this spring.

This is to be Rexall's new home for Herbie's. Not sure whether it'll remain a Herbies or take on the PharmaPlus format in its new home.

The Speedy on Parkdale was closed for a while, then re-opened but wasn't open very long though. Sad seeing the city become a ghost town...again like other recessions.

Yah, the sign for the Speedy along Wentworth was also taken down (it was a giant sign sitting on the side of a building facing East) but I don't think the garage closed yet.

Also there's demolition equipment at the Derby since yesterday or they day before. Any day now...

Wow, that really sucks. I never went there but the old warehouse they're in is absolutely gorgeous.

Too bad about Hobo Hardware. When I was photographing the Keith area, I thought to myself, "it's great that this old factory has a tenant." Hopefully somebody finds something to do with the building, it's a real beauty.

Thanks Flar.

It is a nice building. Obviously from the Queen Victoria days from the style.
Let's hope it doesn't get run down in time.

Pharmacy planned for Derby Tavern site

March 23, 2009
The Hamilton Spectator
(Mar 23, 2009)
When demolition crews are finished tearing down the old Derby Tavern, plans for a Pharma Plus will go ahead.

The tavern on Queenston Road just east of the traffic circle has been a well-known watering hole and hotel in the east end for many years.

"We received a permit application at the end of January of this year to construct a 'shell' for a future pharmacy on this site," Debbie Spence, communications for planning and economic development, wrote in an e-mail. She had no details on timelines.

In the 1920s, it was called the Derby House, a wagon stop for traffic on a rough road that led to Niagara. Its second owners turned it into a larger complex in 1954, adding rooms including a large lobby and dining room.

The Derby was a live country music hot spot in its heydey. It closed last year.
