Unfortunately, I didn't see any time line.

It seems the item includes completing the design concept and costs. They do want to start the ticket surcharge for the next season, so I have to think sooner rather than later.

I'm sure getting the 7-10M for the naming rights will be pretty darn important. Community Center Theater has always sounded so lame to me.

Starting a "Friends of the Sacramento Community Center Theater" is a pretty smart move too. It may not bring in may big donors, but every little bit helps.

Yeah the name is lame. But can you imagine people trying to pronounce the Tsakopoulos Theater? Hey maybe he could finally build his Parthenonian facade here for a few xtra $$?

We went to the Urban Kitchen last night(1801 L Street Building) for a glass of wine and discovered it is a full service restaurant. I was under the impression it was only a wine bar. The owner told us that his chief worked at "The Kitchen" restaurant so the food must be good.

We never paid more for a glass of wine before; however, $11 for a glass of German Reisling, and $12 for a glass of French Chablis! We felt so ripped off we to Safeway and bought a bottle of California Chardonay for $13, and drank the whole bottle before a night of dancing at Badlands.

The place is nice though with an upstairs dining room and outdoor courtyard patio.
To be fair they did offer $6 to $10 glasses of California wines.

You're killing me! You need to get out of Sac more. Just kidding!

In SF, there are places that serve wine by the glass in the $30+ range. And Chablis' (other than Gallo jug wine) are actually very good wines as are some of the really nice Reislings. I hear you though on buying your own wine - last night we had a tamale party at some friends' house near the B St. Theater and went through a bunch of bottles of more affordable store bought Garnachas, Zinfandels, and low end Bordeauxs. Much easier on the wallet...

Well I have yet to go to L Street even though it's a 1/2 block from my work. I've heard/read some negative stuff about it as well. Hopefully they can work it out soon.

I've actually found their wine selection to be pretty selective and well priced for what they serve, though the prices are definitely on the high end for Sacto (along with The Grand Wine Bar). I recognized and talked to the owners at the Family Winemakers tasting in SF last month and they were really friendly. I've eaten there 5-6 times (since I live in the building) and found the service to be pretty friendly and prompt, though some of the food items on the menu are just okay. If you go, I'd stick with the pizzas (very nicely crisped thin crusts) and the burger. Some of the other items are hit or miss, but I've never had anything bad there...

Did you read Midtown zing's scathing review of the place? Hey since you live in the building can you tell me what happened a week or so ago with the flood above the tat shop? By the way I just heard a rummor that the Gov. might be moving into the L Street Lofts. Chew on that.

I missed the review in Midtown Monthly...at best, I'd give the Lounge a 2-2.5/4. If they really ripped it apart in the review, I'd be a bit surprised since it's OK overall. In regard to the flood, I live on the other side of the building but didn't hear anything about it. I'll ask around about the flood and the Guv and let you know if I hear anything interesting back. I know (what's left of) McCain's CA Campaign HQ is over on that side too...inquiry sent.

The flood was caused by someone on the 4th floor trying to weld in a chandelier into their ceiling. The welding set off the fire alarm and thus the flooding from the sprinklers...

My source says that they have also heard the Governor rumor as well, but haven't got confirm yet, though they are working on it too. Also, it's rumored that a Kings' player (Kevin Martin) bought a place in the L Lt. Lofts too....

Given his new contract, he could have bought the whole damn penthouse floor!

Then again, maybe the person would bought two units to combine that was mentioned in the article in the Bee today is Martin. Makes a lot of sense.

One of the central city's last remaining coffee-shop eateries is closing today.

Carrows, a longtime popular spot at 28th and J streets, will be razed and the land used for parking. Eventually a mixed-use building will rise on the corner site.

"They're shutting us down to put up a parking lot," says an angry George Hays, an assistant manager who says he'll be jobless. "We're trying to protest, but it looks like it's too late."

A spokeswoman for Carrows' owner, the Catalina Restaurant Group in Carlsbad, says the company wanted to renew its lease, but the property owners had other plans.

Pete Geremia, who co-owns the site with fellow developer Brian Vail, says Carrows had an option to renew but didn't do so "in a timely manner."

When the option expired, the owners moved forward with other plans: a temporary parking lot, then, "within one to two years," a six-story building including retail shops and condos, Geremia says.

The closure follows the departure of other family-style eateries near downtown and midtown over the years, including Eppie's and Pancake Parade. Holdouts include a Denny's at 3rd and I streets and the Pancake Circus at 21st and Broadway.

Carrows was a regular haunt of seniors seeking camaraderie as well as an affordable meal, says Karen Humphrey, a state worker who ate there regularly with her husband.

"A lot of people were on their own," she says, "and the servers were always friendly and caring."

The closure is hitting many of those regulars hard, says Stephanie Stephenson, a Carrows server for nearly 18 years.

"It's so sad," she says. "I've had senior citizens in here crying their eyes out. And I'm crying with them."

Another surface lot in midtown for 12 - 24 months. I guess emotion depends on if you are one of the several restaurants, bars and clubs in the area or if you are a resident or customer of said establishments or an office worker.

All in all, been at that Carrows (and nearby Lyons) quite a few times for late night after hours chow after a weekend night out.

Wow it's hard for me to get that attached to a coffeeshop. I mean I was bummed out when New Helvetia closed but I didn't cry my eyes out. Anyway I'm sad for those who feel they'll lose something (including a job) but I'm happy to read that it will be replaced with something more urban.

It's seems Midtown is shaping up into two main cores -one in the west and one in the east. (IMO Sutter Fort Area is really Midtown but that's not even debatable). Anyway, people have been trying to name these two areas without much success. The "Handle District" -what is that?? Since downtown has the West End, North End, East End, etc. I propose calling the central-west area of Midtown (roughly between 16th, N, 21st, I)- The West Village and the area around Sutter's Fort (roughly bwtn 29th and 26th, J and N)-The East Village. Yeah I know it's been done to death but it says where it is better than the Handle or the Boutique District does.

3) It's not cheap. It's cheaper than Biba, but it's not cheap!!
4) It's a freeway business. They could do the same thing in any location in the US with a freeway on/off ramp
5) A Carrows could always fit into a 6 story building. If they really want it back, they got a year (or two) to get it together.

Glad to see that POS closing. I hope dennys is next.

What I am not glad about is a parking lot, even if its temporary. I rather they put up a tempory green area or some kind of plaza than a parking lot. I hope they get moving on the new development REALLY quickly. Parking lots are probably the biggest eyesores in midtown right now. They all need to go away.

Waffle Square at 10th and R used to be a Carrows too. I used to think of it as "slow Carrows". 28th and J was "busy Carrows". 10th and R only had a crowd for an hour at lunch when the state employees came in, and not much dinner or weekend business.

I think there must be more to 28th and J closing than Carrow's being slow to renew their lease. Probably the owners didn't want to lease to ANY restaurant now. It should have been easy to rent this to another restaurant, especially with all that offstreet parking at a high traffic intersection.

With Carrow's gone maybe someone will finally rent the old Eppie's at 30th and N. It's been vacant for years. Seems like a perfect spot for Carrow's actually.

As for a six-story condo at 28th and J....I wouldn't want to live at that busy intersection with ambulances whizzing by day and night on their way to Sutter General. East facing units would overlook the Cap City freeway.
