I had heard from people in the steel business they were doing welding in there the day before, so that was just a theory. It fits because like you said the fire was said to have started in the entranceway, where the steel is apparently. Regardless, quite the fire. The neighbouring building was still empty as of last night. Looked like significant damage to the condo itself.. The garage was toast.

Some first names being tossed around for the next Mayor's race:

I have to admit I know little about these potential candidates. Any thoughts on who might seriously address downtown redevelopment?

The only 1 I see actually addressing downtown development would be Loney he seems to have the most urbanist in him. Chambers I don’t know enough about but I really like what he’s doing in St. Norbert.

Get Gillingham as far from being mayor as possible. As much as I shouldn’t support Klein because of his affiliation with Nygard I would be lying to myself if I didn’t say Klein was growing on me because of the way he’s handled NIMBYism in Charleswood recently. Although I think he would use too many taxpayer dollars to develop downtown.

Like what? I don't mean to sound snarky - I just genuinely have zero idea about goings-on in his ward.

I would argue that there's a lot of common ground for different candidates of different positions. Whether you're an urbanist who wants lively and enjoyable streets, or a fiscal conservative who is primarily worried about the city's balance sheet, I think the answer is the same. Downtown needs to be developed and made more attractive to residents and commerce.
The only real outliers are those with an almost religious devotion to cars, like Browaty or that lady from last time around.

Now that I think about it most of the work on Pembina was done before he got appointed so I retract my statement. The main things that were developed since elected is that new Co-op grocer and that building on Pembina/Ducharme.

Kevin Klein, oh man haha

I'm not sure what to make of the Police Board chairs running for mayor. Gillingham and Chambers. I haven't paid enough attention to what they do. But seems like that could be bad news for reining in the police budget.

I wonder if we'll see any of the other familiar faces run again. Roads girl from last time and Shelley Glover.

There was a Free press article a few weeks back that was speculating that Glenn Murray may run again:

Seriously? (about Murray running, not about the other guy being a dick)?

THAT would be great news for the city, IMO.

Imagine if we did that for just one year. Could build out the entire 25 year plan and still have $120 mil+ left over to build pedestrian bridges connecting neighbourhoods across the city. Would change Winnipeg forever.

Glen Murray for mayor.

He hits on all the topics for me. Hands down nobody else.

We'll see what the unions think with all their endorsements and such. Cause they run the City if you didn't know (everyone knows).

Murray is my favourite mayor in terms of the ones who served during my lifetime. I thought he did a great job in office and really helped change the mindset of Winnipeggers.

But that said, he was pretty fresh and invigorating in the 80s and 90s. He might seem pretty stale these days. Is he what the city needs at this point? It's hard to believe there isn't someone younger who could pick up the progressive/urbanist mantle. He certainly has a boatload of experience, though. I'd vote for him.

Look at who the biggest municipal election campaign donors are if you want to know who calls the shots
