Did they ever explain why they erected the entire spire, only to take it down a week or two later?

So the crane can fully move around the tower.

Sorry, my question was unclear. What I was asking about was, why did they erect the full spire in the first place, if they knew they would need to take down most of it later anyway? Just so tourists could take some nice photos for a few days? Or perhaps they actually hadn't realized it would pose a problem for the crane?

It was actually up for a couple of months. It will supposedly be back up in May when all of the cladding is complete.

The good news is that by then, with the cladding complete, they will be ready to light the entire crown, not just the spire.

Construction is moving along swiftly (& ahead of schedule) at #OneVanderbilt! As planned, the top section of the spire was removed to allow the crane
to reach the NW corner & install the last pieces of curtainwall. We're looking forward to the spire's reinstallation in May.

good question. i was thinking maybe they just wanted to test out the spire or something? otherwise it seems odd.

i do know they have been putting this bldg up very fast until now, so it could have been done accidently in the rush? i dk.

Well, if you were down on 10th Ave, and had a good zoom lens, you had the view...

Sure, but you can't beat a 1,000 ft view.

Its crazy how miniscule One57 is made to be next to its new siblings. Because we've all stood at street level and checked it out, and its massive (One57), but from that perspective, man... just seems minature. Like Joe Joe Pesci shooting hoops with Sun Mingming and Yao Ming.

Yeah, you wouldn’t even think of One57 as a supertall from that view, despite it being 1,000 ft. Just a decade ago, we would’t have imagined there would be views from the side of a supertall, of so many supertalls.
