Pardon my ignorance on historical Winnipeg buildings. Where exactly on P & M was that one? Where the current underground mall is standing?

Crazy how that buildings was demo'd. Especially considering the lengths we're currently going through to protect much less structures. Not less important buildings, just much smaller buildings.

Yeah, that's disappointing. Would fill that gaping hole quite nicely.

The City Place leasing web page shows the Asia Gifts shop as a month to month location so maybe somebody wants it for a proper lease.

I rather enjoy seeing those old buildings pre additions and post additions. As pretty much every building (warehouse?) was designed to be expanded upwards. Looks like the McIntyre block has a couple different buildings with various expansions? Or just the original in all its glory? Too symmetrical to be separate buildings I would presume.

Here is some history on it from the Manitoba Historical Society.

Asia Gitt Shops in cityplace is closing. The Bay downtown is cheaping out on the 2nd floor renovations to just a portion of the floor. Shoddy effort at best. MB government still has an outstanding option for one whole floor within The Bay downtown.

The Bay's closing of the 4th floor may actually work out to its advantage. That floor was kind of out of sight, out of mind for many... putting that merchandise on the 2nd floor, within the sight of the significant foot traffic that still passes through the store, could give houseware and bedding sales a nice bump. There's enough room that they could carry pretty much the same selection as they did on the 4th floor... if they were hard up for space they could always open that mezzanine level at the south end of the store which has been closed for several years.

Considering it was posted as coming to Polo Park on Nov 10 and reported as closed Jan 19 I wonder if Sunrise Records in Polo Park was planned as a temporary holiday store. I know Polo tends to try and fill out its vacancies for the holiday season with short term leases.

Seemed like it to me. They never really invested much into any fixtures.

It felt like walking into a Calendar Club when I was there.

^^ Anyone confirmed Walmart's plans for Southdale are still a go? There was a big announcement of huge Walmart closures last week. Something like 16,000 people out of work and a significant number of stores.

I wonder if Winnipeg isn't a little saturated with Walmarts now? I began going to the new one on Taylor shortly after it opened, and it's not quite Target quiet, but it's really not all that busy in there, even on weekends. Although that said, the ones in the outer suburbs still seem quite busy so in that respect maybe Southdale is a reasonable choice for a new location...

Not sure if this was mentioned before as I haven't been on the site in a little while, but what's going on at St. Vital Centre? On a quick trip around to grab a couple of things, I noticed at least 4 stores closing along with Kernels either being remodelled or turning into something else. I was at West49 last week, one of the stores closing, and she said they weren't renewing their lease. Wondering if the same thing is happening at the other ones. Is St. Vital pushing their lease prices too high or something else going on?

The Gap is closing as part of a company wide restructuring, so don't think that one has to do with St. Vital Centre per se.

Interesting, Simon a large developer of outlet malls, has cancelled their plans for a new location in Edmonton and will instead partner with Ivanhoé Cambridge on the Edmonton Airport outlet mall as it was felt the market was not big enough to support both projects.

Ivanhoé Cambridge is the developer behind the Seasons outlet mall in Winnipeg. Winnipeg has plans for four outlet malls currently in varying stages of development. In addition to Seasons there was an announced plan by Tanger, another major player in the outlet mall space, CF's Plaza at Polo, and something in the works near Westport Festival/ASD. It is possible the Westport/ASD project and the Tanger project are the same as Tanger never did announce a location.
