surely these numbers only account for what is reported, not to mention the crap I see everyday. And what criteria are you using to compare this low rate for a metro area to other metro areas?
MARTA has consistently been rated one of the safest transit systems in the U.S. I'm pretty sure it's very simple to compare crime statistics, so your question is a no-brainer, and MARTA has a very low incidence of crime comparared to other systems. Maybe you're buying into the alarmist media coverage of crimes committed "near" MARTA stations that causes so much hysteria among MARTA-haters.

If the crap you see is serious, then it should be reported. I'm not really sure why you aren't reporting it if it's serious, since you're witnessing it. If it isn't serious crap, then what is your point?

As for your question about "acceptable" numbers of incidents...yes, one robbery per week is very acceptable on a transit system in a metro of 5 million plus.

I have missed the construction part of MARTA crime in this discourse. Move to city discussions please.

Good God...

1. Crime of course is never truly acceptable, but in a realistic sense one instance per week in a large metro IS.

2. You said that the stats don't include all of the crap you see that goes unreported. That's how I know you aren't reporting it - because you said so.

3. The same people don't ride MARTA everyday...that's why I included the metro population figure and not just ridership numbers - it wasn't to manipulate anything. But even just using MARTA ridership figures, the stats are very low.

There is no need to make comments like the ones you made and then act like you didn't.

Urrrrrrrgggggggggghhhhhh!!!!!

Is there not a section about MARTA and other metro transit authorities under the Atlanta section in the Southeast tab? Reading these types of discussions in this section gets very tiresome. The intial author of the MARTA discussion should have placed this in that section so the rest of us aren't overly subjected to people's personal opinions.

The main construction comment re Marta "crime" is that I believe unreasonable analyses of the crime stats on public transit systems may lead to people not using the system and ultimately affecting the density of office and residential construction undertaken near transit stops. Perception of crime leads to fear of travel. Most of the large city transit systems I know of or used have been considered safe when connecting high density, built up areas, where people do not drive to work or have a car-dependent job. Getting off at a transit stop that is mostly empty space, parking lots etc is quite alienating. Getting off in a highly built up area gives one a sense of safety. So there is a link between construction and perceived transit crime, but is complicated. Nonetheless, this is more a "cities" type discussion because it deals with why cities are built the way they are, not usually specific construction projects.

Two proposals submitted for Fort McPherson development

Two groups of developers submitted packages Tuesday outlining their qualifications and visions for developing a 104-acre segment of the now-closed Fort McPherson in south Fulton County. One team includes Cousins Properties, The Integral Group and Forest City Enterprises and the other a paring of Atlanta developers Carter and H. J. Russell &

Next week the McPherson Redevelopment Authority will name a committee that will decide which group will develop the first segment of the entire 488-acre tract that was home of the the U.S. Army Forces Command and the headquarters of the Army Reserve Command. The garrison was closed in September.

The plan for the 104 acres includes a Veterans Administration medical clinic that is already in place and a proposed bio-science research and development center. The overall vision for the property is to preserve 40 existing historic structures, add residential units and build a 30-acre event-festival space.

Pharr Rd. Apartment Tower

The apartment tower going up on the southside of Pharr (roughly across from Eclipse) is in motion. They are currently putting in the parking deck in the middle of the prop.

Rock.

I was by the Skyhouse site earlier and it was kinda hard to see as I was in a car and it was dark already, but it looked like site prep had begun and equipment (I.E. bulldozers, etc.) was on site.

This development is on the southside of the street (with Buckhead Atlanta being on the northside of the street).

They are making some quick progress. Very cool to see how fast they are working.

(as a point of reference...there is a huge Billboard for School of Rock right in front of the development as you turn onto Pharr rd. from P-tree.

Anyone have some detailed info on the apartment complex on Pharr? Units, stories, etc. It's a pretty big site (~6 acres) to have flown under the radar so much.

edit: quick research shows it is 375 units...not bad.
