Somebody's gotta post some Fourth of July shots here. Might as well be me.

Here's my first experiment with HDR.

Built in 1929, Beverly Shores (west of Michigan City, IN) is the last working survivor of the Spanish-styled stations built along the Samuel Insull-owned
electric interurban railway lines. It was in severe disrepair and pending demolition when restoration was undertaken in 1998. Beverly Shores now is a flag
stop for both eastbound and westbound South Shore electric commuter trains that operate between South Bend, IN and Chicago (~90 miles).

nicely done HDR Robert. The historical info really adds to the image too.

we've probably talked about this before, but I'd like to give it another try, what do you guys use to make the HDRs?

Agreed. I see so many photos on Flickr with excellent composition, yet the HDR is overdone to the point that they look like cheap cartoons.

Keep up the great work, Robert! And always a pleasure to see your photos, SFOH.

I like the starbursts around the streetlights. Did you use a filter, or just stop down and use a long exposure?

For a start, I tried what I already had, built into Photoshop CS5:

File > Automate > Merge to HDR Pro

It's simple to use, but doesn't have as much flexibility as some of the dedicated programs I've read about.

I've heard others recommend Photomatix and Nik HDR Efex Pro. I want to see if they have some free demos I can download to try, before I buy them.

My first attempt at selective desaturation (or whatever you call it).

Returning to the Scene of the Crime by C.M. Keiner, on Flickr

I also spent two hours taking dozens of photos of my left shoe, which probably makes me crazy, but that's another story (and more photos) for another day.

i use photomatix as do many others on here such as i am hydrogen. its good and pretty simple to use. make noise though so some good noise reduction software is recommended as well. i have also used oloneo. i tried it in beta stages. its okay but i prefer photomatix.
