Also, shouldn't the W Hotel be a bit taller than the Ashton? I remember hearing its supposed to have a rooftop higher than 360's if Im wrong somebody please correct me...

Yes, the W will be a bit taller, but from that angle they'll look roughly the same height.

Wow...that view does NOT suck at all...nice...

W will be about 20-25 feet taller than Ashton, so they'll look pretty similar.

I think Goldenboot had said the W would be 478 feet to the roof. that would be 5 feet higher than 360's roof. The Ashton is supposed to be 412 feet tall from what I hear from the architects.

With the Spring now at 30 floors, I'm kinda suprised its not making more of an impact on the skyline. It's hard to believe the Spring will be 20 taller than the Ashton at this point. Is there that much difference in the ground elevation.

With an additional 13 floors to go, it doesn't seem to have the visual vertical statement I thought it would make.

Well adding 13 floors to the 30 is an increase of over 43%. That means there is a lot more height to be added.

I knew that I wasnt just making things in my head about the height of the W Hotel. In that case I don't think they will look the same height even from that angle. If the Ashton is only 412 or 416 feet, and the W is 478 that is quite a bit of difference in the heights. At least 60 feet or so difference. I would make the W hotel a bit taller then in the renderings.

Looking at it from the West (eg, MoPac), it tends to blend into the Monarch behind it. As it gets taller than the Monarch, I think it will stand out more. And the fact that it's on the very end of downtown means that it's just not noticeable most of the time as you walk around.

heres the difference between 412 and 478... i took the height of the ashton and multiplied it by 16% then transfered it to the w site.

looking at that last pic makes me think (and i know i will get lynched for mentioning this) i wish there was an elevated EAST-WEST expressway that sliced right through downtown so i could get a good look at all the high rises

the only other way is from 35 and the 'Pac, which almost makes me veer off the road when i'm gazing lol

We've rehashed this, but I've seen the drawings of W, and I think that Kevin's estimate of 478 feet for the building is incorrect. I come up with 432, not 478.

We'll see when it goes up.

POSSIBLE CORRECTION...The 35-story version of the W Austin Hotel & Residences would have risen 446' above Third Street! However, I believe the current version may rise 37 stories and be closer to the proclaimed 478' tall.
