Cambridge Suites Redevelopment | ?m | 71s | WZMH l pre-construction

At first I thought they were proposing to demolish the 21 storey post-modern (formerly Cambridge Suites) hotel, but they are going to strip it to its bones… and then this:

“Working closely with a structural engineer, they beefed up the core of the building in order to provide a strong base for the 50 additional storeys — no small feat.”

The tower would have very narrow floorplates at only 540 sq. metres (the city encourages developers to not build much bigger than 750 sq. metre floor-plates, with mixed-results ;-).

560 condo units in an entirely updated building with the latest sustainable green building features (including a green roof). The mechanical penthouse will be incorporated into the architecture,
which definitely earns it some bonus points. On the left below, the 21s former hotel as it looks today. On the right, the 71 storey redevelopment.

Like many others, I have heaped digust on this Pemberton mistake, but local photographer Benito, who has documented 1000s of pics of The One and other Yorkville construction projects, has managed to find an extreme angle of actual interest… which just under-lines how this mess could have been somewhat saved by the use of opaque or heavily fritted balcony glass (instead of the transparent glass that reveals the terrible window-wall lurking behind).

The floor-plates actually do create the interesting pattern the rendering promised. This below…

Pinnacle One Yonge | 312.5m | 95s | Pinnacle | Hariri Pontarini l u/c

This one below of SkyTower's podium was taken during a tour of Phase 1 with the architects (HPA), shot from a balcony of the Phase 1 tower.

I think the brick colour is actually a sort of antique red (not well shown in the most recent rendering ^ above). Closer to this older rendering below.

A nice addition to a great neighbourhood already filling in with great buildings (COBE’s Canary Landing, aA’s Canary Landing, BDPQ’s Canary House… wow, there’s a lot of damn canaries in this former coal mine (industrial past ;-).

839 Yonge | 157m, 133m | 49s, 41s l Canadian Tire l pre-construction

Utterly ridiculous monster on Yonge Street (yes… Yonge Street). Would be fine on one of 6 dozen plots available in Mississauga, but at the corner of Yonge and Davenport? C’mon.

Across the subway tracks from Rosedale.

80 Bloor Street West | 250m | 72s | Krugarand | Giannone Petricone l Approved

Just a fuzzy rendering (expect better ones soon). This one was headed for opposition at LPAT but they struck a deal (which includes an extension of Yorkville Village Park), and the City approved it.

About 1400 condos, office and retail in 2 very narrow conjoined towers.

80 Bloor is approved? Good. It has been a proposal for ages. Hope it's built before we're all in our drooling dotage.
