Think architecture used to be JSA, which you may be more familiar with.

The fact that they gave in and didn't allow for residential will result in the project being mildly successful as opposed to greatly successful. The residential component would have made it a truly active space during all hours. The Village Center will require that nearly every person that uses it has to drive, as opposed to residential which would have created a built in customer base for the retailers that will be opening their doors their. Obviously the residential component wouldn't have been the entire customer base, but would have provided for a consistent percentage of the customer base.

In my opinion the two biggest development fails, that people are raving about, are Holladay Village, explained above, and Station Park, being lauded as Transit Oriented Development. Both project missed their enormous potential, by not thinking outside the suburban sprawl box, and will receive just that, suburban sprawl success, as opposed to true mixed use walkable success. I'm glad Fairbourne is developing like it is, and I applaud West Valley City for their vision.
Don't forget about the project at Layton Frontrunner station. Those apartments turned out much bigger than I was expecting from the renderings.

Park City - City Hall memo: construction and more construction along Main Street - The chief building official details a list of projects that are underway this year

Jay Hamburger - The Park Record

http://www.parkrecord.com/news/ci_24...ce=most_viewed

The redo of the building known for years as the Main Street Mall is underway. There is a series of construction projects along Main Street this fall. Mayor Dana Williams and the Park City Council received a briefing this week about the work on Main Street. Christopher Reeves/Park Record

The Park City Building Department this week issued a memo listing the private-sector construction projects that have received permits along Main Street, a rundown that illustrates the high level of investment being put into the shopping, dining and entertainment district.

There are projects underway up and down the street, some of them major and in clear view and others minor that someone might not notice. Chad Root, the chief building official, drafted the memo. It was submitted to Mayor Dana Williams and the Park City Council as an update rather than in anticipation of a detailed discussion.

"I have been told from some long time locals this is the most activity that they have seen or heard about since the fire," Root said in the memo.

The redo of the building known for years as the Main Street Mall is underway. There is a series of construction projects along Main Street this fall. Mayor Dana Williams and the Park City Council received a briefing this week about the work on Main Street. Christopher Reeves/Park Record The fire he references was a disastrous 1898 blaze that damaged or destroyed a huge swath of what was Park City of that era. The rebuilding involved a major construction effort.

The private sector this year is putting significant investment into Main Street projects, anticipating that Park City's strong emergence from the recession will continue. There was a series of high-profile ownership changes along Main Street during the downturn, and some of the projects listed in the memo involve properties under new ownership in recent years.

Root said in the memo the list is not exhaustive. Many projects that are smaller were not identified on the list, he said.

The properties listed in the memo are:

692 Main St. The memo says the building was gutted and the developer is adding to the height of the property.

632 Main St. Root says in the memo the building was gutted and a roof is now being put on.

201 Heber Ave., which sits at the high-profile intersection of Main Street and Heber Avenue. The memo says work is underway on the plaza with plans to have the plaza completed by Christmas.

614 Main St. The second floor will be remodeled with a residential unit.

562 Main St. a historic building will be reconstructed, including additional square footage and a basement.

the Claim Jumper building at 573 Main St.

427 Main St., the site of Park City Live. The memo says the stage will be redone and new stairs will be built on the outside of the building.

333 Main St., the site of the building once known as the Main Street Mall. The redevelopment of the building, the most visually jarring project on the street over the past few weeks. The memo says the demolition of the exterior is expected to be completed Nov. 1. The section of sidewalk that passes the site will reopen at that point. The redevelopment of the building will feature commercial space on the Main Street level and residences upstairs.

268 Main St. A nightclub will be remodeled so it will be allowed to have more people inside.
The memo, meanwhile, offers a brief preview of two projects that may be under construction in 2014. One of the projects, at the Main Street-Heber Avenue intersection, will involve building an additional story. The other project listed is the expansion of the Kimball Art Center. The art center, though, must still secure the development permits it would need before construction could start.

Root did not list the streetscape improvements undertaken by City Hall this year along Main Street. The improvements are meant to make the street a more attractive place for shoppers and diners.

Mayor Dana Williams and the Park City Council received a briefing about the construction on Main Street at a Thursday meeting. Root, using a slideshow, provided an overview of the work. City Councilor Cindy Matsumoto asked whether construction projects are ever denied on Main Street.

"Time out, that's all," Matsumoto said.

Williams, meanwhile, referred to what he labeled a "massive deforestation project" at the 201 Heber Ave. project site, where the Sky Lodge property is situated. Root's report mentioned that the trees would be taken down.

Liza Simpson, a Park City Councilor who lives on Main Street, said in an interview the projects in the commercial district have been concentrated on Main Street itself this year. In past years, she said, projects oftentimes would be split between Main Street and Swede Alley, one block east.

"The most impactful things have been the crane at the corner of Main and Heber, and I don't like walking past the empty storefronts," Simpson said.

Simpson, who works at Dolly's Bookstore on Main Street, said the bookseller and the attached Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory have been busy amid the construction projects. She said people who live along Main Street are used to construction, including a string of major projects dating to before the 2002 Winter Olympics.

"As a resident, there's been a steady stream of construction since we started the transit center," Simpson said.

If my future kids inherit my tastes in colors and materials, I almost would want to move to this neighborhood just so they could attend this school. J/K, but almost serious. I love everything about this school.

Newly Completed Draper Park Middle School

VCBO ARCHITECTURE...http://www.vcbo.com/draper-park-middle.html

Draper Park Middle School was constructed on a fast track schedule to accommodate the needs of the surrounding, fast-growing community. In order to meet the challenging time frame, a highly collaborative construction model was necessary.

After dropping off my wife at the LDS hospital for some training with here job I drove down State on my way to Fashion Place to do some shopping (cough... Lego store). I saw that the 4 story hotel in Murray's downtown was up to the 2nd floor for at least half of the building.

The 6 story Hotel on 5300 South was up to 3 floors and most of the floor to the 4th level was in as they had the handrails in for safety around the edges. This Hotel is a mixed bag for me. I love how it has some height but also bummed that it is set back slightly from the street with some parking up front of the building.

Made me think of how Murray could jumpstart their downtown. I think it would be great to see an addition of a good 1000 hotel rooms. That would increase foot traffic and need for more restaurants in the area. People will see the area as great places to eat and then it could start to build 4-7 story housing. With the high density housing and plenty of places to eat hopefully businesses will see it as a place to move and some office high-rises will rise in the area.

I see Murray as Salt Lakes Mid-town, as it has a great location in the middle of the valley. Great access to 3 TRAX stops, Front Runner Stop, I-15 and I-215. Connect a street car line between 5300 South and 4500 South that runs down State Street so that it gives easy access to Murray's downtown. I have also thought it would be good to extend Main to either 4800 S or even all the way to Vine Street. Extending Main would connect the growth going on in the Fireclay area to what Murray wants to do for a downtown.

Agree with all your great points Steven. Murray has so much potential it boggles the mind.

Does anyone live, work, or drive by the Murray area? We're overdue for some pics of the many ongoing projects there.

Nothing major.....But a little bit of news coming from West Valley.

West Valley City awards contract for Fairbourne Station parking
Development » City to build four-story plaza to support new city center

Another key piece of Fairbourne Station in West Valley City — a four-story, 800-stall parking plaza — will be on the drawing board soon and could be under construction by early next year.

I don't mind the parking in front of the 6 story hotel on 53rd. I don't really consider that to be part of downtown Murray, but I am happy that the one at State and Vine is being built right up to the sidewalk. I think this hotel alone will be a nice first step in a redeveloped downtown Murray.

Murray does have a Downtown Mater Plan that I think is very proactive in reclaiming the downtown core. Here is a great link that lays out the entire downtown area.

Interesting link! The developer is Gerding Edlen, and the Architecture firm is GBD Architects of Portland, both from Portland. They are the ones who were at the forefront of the development of the Pearl District, and the South Waterfront(a large development south of downtown Portland with a bunch of 20 to 30+sory condo highrises).

Finally was able to find at least one pic of the Holladay Village Project. Looks like they're doing a nice job with the exterior materials and detailing.

Yet-to-be built Park City studio already attracting Hollywood interest

PARK CITY — A major movie studio that broke ground earlier this month already has filmmakers lining up to use the future Park City studio.

The Quinn’s Junction site for Raleigh Studios has caught the attention of several producers, including one for a major motion picture, two network television shows, a full-length animated film and several commercials. The studio has received a letter of intent from the producer of the full-length film, which has been approved and funded, studio chairman Greg Ericksen said.

“It’s quite unusual to have that kind of a line for a studio that is starting to go up and not completed. We’re very pleased with the reaction,” he said.

The $125 million, 30-acre studio is expected to be completed in 2014, according to Ericksen. It will have sound stages, a production office, post-production recording studios, lodging services, performance venues and a retail component.

“We believe this is a game changer for the industry and will make Utah a hub for the world as far as the combination of the technology and motion pictures,” Ericksen said.

The site was designed to support all stages of moviemaking. Currently, filmmakers film on location in Utah only to leave to complete studio and post-production work.

“It was more a tourist kind of model, but now it will be an industry model, which is really what we needed,” Ericksen said. “Everyone knows that Utah has some of the greatest scenery and diverse scenery in the country.”

Ericksen expects the studio to help the local economy in a big way.

“For ages now, Utah has not had that capability or capacity but now it will. It will bring a lot more industry and dollars to the state in terms of jobs and economics,” he said.

Had a chance to snap a couple of cell phone pictures of the Murray projects while on my lunch break from my car. Not great angles but better than nothing I guess.
