I saw in my work today... the press release will be today at some point regarding the expansion of Market Square. The design is the same one that was posted many moons ago and it is going to be Genesys telecommunications company that currently takes up the second and third floors of market square will occupy the 40,000 square foot new addition.

More info on Peel Plaza....

[Peel Plaza Zoning Gets Final Approval]

16:34:23

Common council has given final approval to rezone the area known as Peel Plaza in order to make way for a new police headquarters, justice complex and parking garage. Council has also approved hiring the Stewart McKelvey firm to provide legal services during the requests for qualifications and proposals.
The firm's legal services will cost the city 180 thousand dollars. Council recently approved another 420 thousand dollars to hire Consultants Deloitte Touche.
That's on top of costs for architectural and design services. Construction is expected to begin this fall.

Market Square expansion to begin immediately

BRUCE BARTLETT
TELEGRAPH-JOURNAL

SAINT JOHN - The city's economy received a vote of confidence Tuesday when the Hardman Group announced plans to begin a 40,000-square-foot expansion at Market Square.

The additional space will be added along Smythe and Union streets to house the offices of Genesys Telecommunications Laboratories Inc., a current tenant of Market Square at dockside. The Genesys centre in Saint John provides support, quality-assurance testing and software development for clients throughout North and South America.

"We are excited about being a part of this positive growth for the city," said Colin Whitcomb, executive vice-president of the Hardman Group.

"The expansion will build on the growth Genesys is experiencing and will bring more positive changes to the city as we develop the new wing and position new tenants in the dockside space".

Since 1993, the Hardman Group has been involved in improvements to Market Square. The historic facility, a recipient of several design awards, is now considered one of New Brunswick's most popular destinations for both locals and tourists, bringing thousands to the waterfront to explore, shop, dine and be entertained, Whitcomb said.

Genesys' Saint John operation is its main Canadian location and an important part of its global operations, he said. With the recent transfer of 20 positions from headquarters in California and the addition of several new positions, the Saint John office currently employs more than 130 people who have been working out of two locations.

Genesys and the Hardman Group are collaborating to design and create a modern office space that is large enough to accommodate the company's current needs while allowing for future growth, Whitcomb said. Construction on the new three-story addition to Market Square will begin immediately and will be completed by the end of this year.

Genesys employees will enjoy being located near the waterfront in the uptown with easy access to Harbour Passage and the pedway link to restaurants, shopping, services and fitness facilities, Whitcomb said.

The Hardman Group has a long history of developing projects in the Atlantic provinces.

In recent years, the firm has been working with the city to develop the waterfront Coast Guard site into a new urban community that will include condominiums, a new hotel for the city as well as commercial and retail space.

Q-Plex: Feds to commit funds today

Recreation Town hopes to issue tender call by April 21

C5ANDREW MCGILLIGAN
TELEGRAPH-JOURNAL

QUISPAMSIS - The federal government will officially commit its share of funding for the Q-Plex during an event today at Quispamsis Town Hall.

Fundy Royal MP Rob Moore had previously promised the town $3 million toward the estimated $22-million cost of the facility.

Today's announcement is expected to make it official with the funds coming through the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency. The province has committed to $2.5 million of funding through the Regional Development Corporation.

Quispamsis Mayor Murray Driscoll would not confirm what the announcement will be, but said it is a happy one.

"I certainly wouldn't be waiting for an announcement to make me unhappy," Driscoll said during Tuesday's town council meeting.

The town has gone through the Municipal Capital Borrowing Board for approval to borrow $14 million for the recreation project. Quispamsis has received preliminary approval pending the confirmation of grants and other funding, including the federal dollars.

The tentative opening date for the Q-Plex is late summer or early fall of 2010. The facility will house an ice surface with the mechanical infrastructure in place to twin it at a future date, an outdoor pool and an indoor walking track, among other features.

Architectural drawings for the Q-Plex were scheduled to be completed by Feb. 13, but Driscoll said they are not done yet.

The town hopes to issue a tender call for construction of the facility by April 21.

In other council news, Driscoll took time during the meeting to go over the events for the town's portion of Winterfest taking place Sunday. A snow bath, community skate, family sliding party, live entertainment as well as free hotdogs, hot chocolate and treats will all be part of the day.

"We're asking people to bring their friends and have a wonderful time," he said.

Council also approved three locations for street lights to be added on Stock Farm Road. The issue of poor visibility on the road at night was brought to council's attention by resident Suzanne Allain.

A report by Quispamsis director of engineering and public works Gary Losier said the downgrade of Stock Farm Road, combined with the curves as the grade changes in the hill, do present darker areas. A fourth location was conditionally approved pending discussions with a resident in the area.

On a somber note, Driscoll expressed the town's condolences to the family of RCMP Const. Jason Porter and his two children, five-year-old daughter Hannah and three-year-old son Jack who were killed Sunday in a highway crash.

Driscoll called the accident a tragedy beyond words.

"I'm just lost for words to express how deep we feel about the tragic events," he said.

It would be a smart idea IMO. The Harbour Bridge is going to down to two lanes next year as they resurface the whole thing, so a lot of traffic will be using the Reversing Falls Bridge for at least a year while that is happening. If they started tearing up Simms Corner at the same time, the traffic coming and going from the West Side would be disastrous.

If you asked me, the traffic at Simms corner is already disasterous.

Housing

Leinster Court had its grand opening today. I went for a tour and saw one market and one subsidized unit. Both were very nice, as was the common room.

City receives green cash and goes for more
February 20, 2009 - 6:36 pm
By: Denise Barkhouse - News 88.9 Staff

SAINT JOHN, NB - Four green city initiatives have received of a combination of funding and low interest loans totalling nearly 4.3 million dollars.

The cash comes from the Green Municipal Fund.

3.6 million dollars is being made available in low interest loans, the rest is cash that doesn't have to be repaid.

The money benefits four environmentally friendly projects ranging from the energy efficiency retrofit at the Aquatic Centre, the green Saint John Transit facility being built on the east side, the new police headquarters and the city's integrated sustainability plan

Building and Inspections Commissioner Bill Edwards said the city won't stop there either.

It's looking for funding to help extract energy out of the harbour, that will in turn be used to heat and cool city buildings

"We have a number of applications out there. Probably we wouldn't get all of it from any one particular fund. We've talked to the Climate Change Fund, those people there as well and they seem very encouraging and want to be involved. We've asked for about four million from them. So we're throwing out the nets and we'll get whatever we can." Edwards said.

He said this project doesn't come cheap adding initial start up costs will range in the 30-40 million dollar range.

Edwards said the amount of energy savings a project of this scope will have all depends on the number of buildings the city hooks into it.
