Actually, Wikipedia claims this thing has a 300m rise. Even out here that's enough to be considered a "mountain" depending on the prominence.

300m in Ontario's a mountain and 30 000 people out west is a city. Crazy world we live in if its not small city syndrome it's small mountain.

While it's just an administrative categorization, 5 000 people gets you city status in Saskatchewan.

I made a big post but it didn't go through for some reason...

To answer questions, it is a mafic sill, part of the Nor'Wester Mountains or Nor'Wester Escarpment. There is a road up the back to a lookout located half way up, and trails to the summit. Tower Mountain, southwest of Thunder Bay, is the second highest point in Ontario but like Ishpatina Ridge (the highest), it is not a mountain. The Sleeping Giant has a prominence of 380 meters and is the highest mountain in Ontario by that measure.

Mount McKay is about the same height, width and depth as downtown Toronto.

Northeast of Thunder Bay, there are canyons. Here is the most famous one:

That's OK, 8,000 in Ontario allows you to become a city.

Dryden is actually an exception. Ontario requires 10,000 residents before a municipality can become a city. Dryden likely got city status because it had a high estimated population one year, or was granted an exception because of its location.

In Northern Ontario, they should be more lenient and let towns become cities at a lower population, say 5,000 or even 2,500. That is because they have more responsibilities with the lack of a county-level government and are service centres for a larger area.

In Southern Ontario, I think 10,000 is reasonable, although most places with population in the 10,000 to 20,000 range are towns.

They don't need those responsibilities because the DSSAB system fills the gap. Marathon doesn't need city taxation powers because the city of Thunder Bay is providing social housing and welfare for them.

I seem to remember Kenora really struggling to get city status ... at that time the Province seemed unbending on the 10,000 requirement. Perhaps it's been relaxed. Dryden makes a rather unconvincing city.

Kenora became a city when it was amalgamated with Keewatin and Jaffray Malick.

Dryden is an unconvincing city. Fort Frances would have been a better choice.

Today I made a partial cloverleaf interchange in Simcity 4. It is based on Ontario's Ministry of Transportation "Parclo A-4" design. What do you think?

You see these interchange types all over the place in southern Ontario. Take this one on Highway 407 for instance.

I have Sim City 4 am I'm left wondering how the heck you made that?

I'm sure there's soo many packs I could probably get for that game ,but as it stands now with no packs the game still periodically crashes.

Topic change, did they finish the 400 extension from Barrie to Sudbury? I was up there 2 years ago and saw all types of construction. We took highway 69 which was empty and felt like I was traveling through the Twilight Zone or something.

They are currently finished up to Nobel and from Estaire to Sudbury. I believe the Killarney-Estaire section opens next year. The rest is under final design.

Can a change in our Ontario government change these plans? I'm really hoping not.

Being in the UK this summer, it was so nice to be on roads with a minimum of signs of any kind, and absolutely no advertising signs whatsoever. It had a much more picturesque appearance and generally felt more peaceful without the information overload. Hopefully when GPS is universal, everyone will have a readout on the dashboard that tells them what highway they're on and what the speed limit is, eliminating the need for millions of signs.
