Some will, some won’t. That’s what art is all about.

Yup, the beauty of art et al... and I know it is not done as of yet, but what could have been...

Better than a blank wall, but such a missed opportunity to what was originally proposed or the second idea of a Jason Carter. Alas.

A Jason Carter would have been amazing there. What was originally proposed and why in the end was this selected? It's okay, but just doesn't really suit the area.

The original design was by two indigenous artists, very urban in look/graffiti like. I thought it was a bit much, but certainly better than what I see here.

The (E)DBA approached him and were working down that path, but for a variety of reasons didn't get that deal done.

I wish that I had kept both the initial proposal and a photoshopped Carter with a coyote overlooking the valley and city.

Any type of art on that wall is likely welcomed by 99.9% of the general public that use the park or walk by it on a frequent basis. Maybe 0.01% of the population really cares about who the artist could have been.

It isn't about the artist though... it was about a far more interesting final piece and given that Alex was Metis, more tied to the park.

Jason Carter was never really an option. There was discussions, that's all. He doesn't do murals like this, wasn't every really interested so I'm not sure why even bring his name into this discussion. If you don't like the mural, that's another thing.

It was an option, scheduling was the biggest issue and so it was dropped.

^That's not really true but sure.

Grindstone got to the wall before anyone else did, proud they moved forward and got it done. Next year's Mural Massive festival is going to be even bigger.

Do you have a copy of the original mural? I cannot find mine.

I wonder if Mural Massive will turn into something larger like the Beltline Urban Mural Project (BUMP) in Calgary, which has had a lot of success with neat mural projects down there. We have many amazing artists here in Edmonton so I feel like that trajectory is possible.

A blast from the past! Apparently I was thinking of Alex Decoteau Park back in 2004.

Finally found that original mural concept by an indigenous youth artist.

Convincing Google that a parking lot is not a park

At some point Google Maps decided that the parking lot on along 102 Ave across the alley from Alex Decoteau Park is in Alex Decoteau Park: https://goo.gl/maps/YY8uUho4F7BzxPhy8
My third attempt at convincing them that the lot isn't located in anything is still pending. If anyone has special Google Maps mojo, maybe you can have better success.

That parking lot is for a small strip mall that has nothing but a string of beauty salons. I would just raze the whole bloody thing and replace it with an extension of Alex Decoteau Park c/w big-ass fountain.
