I believe this is where Le W/E is now located (taken July 28, 2006)

8 bucks a day. That seems cheap now.

Not all construction was without major problems. No, this is not a demolition. This building at 301 Elgin collapsed while under construction on March 31, 1966. As a kid, I saw the results. Shocking! One fatality.

Thanks for those throwbacks Harls! Weird to think that the Corktown Footbridge was approved under Chiarelli's reign. That was the first true cycling/pedestrian major infrastructure built by the City afaik. Bridges over the Queensway built before then don't count cause cyclists are not allowed to use them, and are more for drivers (see alternative to the Blair overpass Blair road, which has no sidewalk).

Never heard of this one before. Quite tragic. Thanks for sharing. Heron Bridge was another around that same era.

Ouch. Here is a 360 degree pano I took in December of 2006.

Harls went all in on the smudge brush.

It would seem that 1966 was a bad year for such things. On August 10, 1966 a section of the Heron Road Bridge collapsed, while under construction. The final report stated that "green wood" was being used in the falsework, which could not support the load of the wet concrete.

(photo from Ottawa Citizen article)

A memorial stone bearing the names of those who died in that tragedy is on the west end of the south bridge.

My uncle was at Vincent Massey Park when the bridge went down.

Blockbuster. Those were the days.

And look, Somerset House didn't look quite as bad back then. Imagine how much cheaper it would have been to fix it up at the time.

I received my first Blockbuster card from that location on Bank St. when I was attending Carleton. I think I still have it saved some place, so my great grandchildren can find it and say 'wtf' or equivalent.

Thanks to our sponsor J.OT13, here is a photo thread on the Somerset House demolition that I took back in December of 2007.

You should! I'm posting all my pics there now. It's so much easier to use. I can instantly post a pic straight from my phone.

Probably can't see any of the Gatineau side now from this angle now.

Harley613, it's Hoggytime. Get out there and snap us a similar pic from the war museum!

Don't make me pull out the d40x..
